Description

The Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for an open-rank, full-time, tenured or tenure-track Computational Communication faculty member. The candidate should use computational social science methods in service of communication research and practice.

The candidate would be housed in the Moody College of Communication with an appointment in one or more of the college departments and schools that best fits their research (Advertising and Public Relations; Communication Studies; Journalism and Media; Radio-Television-Film; and Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences), with the opportunity for a courtesy appointment in an affiliated unit, such as the Computer Science Department or iSchool. Candidates would also have the opportunity to join the vibrant research center and institute culture in Moody College.

The candidate should have a research program that displays excellence in applying computational social science methods such as big data analytics, network analysis, NLP, machine learning, or data visualization to study communication and media phenomena.

The appointment will begin in August 2022.

In addition to teaching graduate seminars, the ability to teach large undergraduate lecture classes and web-based courses are preferred. The candidate should be able to teach computational social science courses including teaching programs such as Python or R.

The ideal candidate would use computational methods to investigate interactions between technologies and society. Possible research areas could include algorithmic bias or auditing, personalization/ targeting, virality, fairness in AI, content moderation, collective intelligence, human-computer interactions, social contagion, etc.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. at the time of the appointment. The applicant's Ph.D. could be from fields other than communication, such as computer science, information, political science, sociology, or a related field. The candidate should be able to teach computational social science courses including teaching programs such as Python or R.
