Position Summary
The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for stewarding and strengthening the brand of the College of Education and raising the visibility of the College. The Director is responsible for overseeing the production of marketing and communication materials to effectively reach and engage College of Education stakeholders and audience, including prospective and current students, educators throughout the region, potential and current project partners, alumni, faculty, the broader campus community, national academic and education leaders, and others. These efforts should focus on increasing the visibility of the Collene and demonstrating the impact of the school’s research, teaching and engagement activities in Maryland and beyond. The Director also develops and executes a strategic marketing and communication vision and plan that ensures consistent and compelling messaging, visuals, and design are deployed across and beyond the College in a way that supports the overall brand identity and strategy.
The Director will oversee and contribute to a variety of communications functions for the College, including internal communications, media relations, social media, and alumni and stakeholder communications. They will also provide direction, oversight, and content creation for the College’s publications, including a magazine, e-newsletters, social media accounts, and the website. The Director will provide support to the Dean, developing messaging and writing/producing speeches, presentations, blog posts, and correspondence as necessary.
The COE is growing its Marketing and Communications team, and the Director is responsible for identifying personnel needs and hiring, training, and supervising employees. In addition to building a responsive and dynamic communications team, the Director will identify and manage contractors retained to provide needed services. The Director also maintains and manages relationships with campus communications providers and allies, including the University of Maryland Office of Marketing and Communications.
The Director reports to the Dean of the College as a member of the Dean’s leadership team, taking high-level direction from their strategic leadership objectives. The Director must regularly and independently make decisions that align with that direction, consider the perspectives of all stakeholders, and keep projects moving at an appropriate pace. The Director will also identify and develop processes to promote consistency and stakeholder engagement in the College’s marketing and communication efforts.

Minimum Qualifications
-
Undergraduate degree in a field
related to marketing, communications, journalism, English, or
public affairs
A minimum of seven years’ experience
creating and executing effective communications strategies
Ability to communicate effectively
through writing and speaking, relating complex information to
multiple audiences and stakeholders, as well as knowledge of common
style guides (e.g., AP)
Experience supporting the development
and execution of a marketing and communication plan, employing
strategic decision-making skills
Leadership, management, and/or
supervision experience
Understanding of and commitment to
the College’s values of impact, excellence, diversity and
inclusion, innovation, social justice, collaboration, and
community
Preferred Skills and Experience

Successful communications and
marketing experiences in the context of colleges and universities
and/or academic programs
Successful experience developing
operational budgets and managing unit finances
Demonstrated ability to utilize
analytics, conduct surveys, and develop metrics to assess the
effectiveness and value of proposed and deployed communication
strategies
Proficiency in media distribution
systems (ex. Cision), Google Analytics, CRM systems (ex.
Salesforce), Drupal, MailChimp, social media management platforms
(ex. Hootsuite), etc.
Ability to work within a team
structure and a high-paced environment, meeting deadlines and
managing multifaceted projects
Knowledge about equity, social
justice, diversity and inclusion
Ability to build relationships and
communicate effectively with diverse constituencies and
stakeholders within and outside of the College of Education and
University of Maryland
Excellent storytelling skills and the
ability to effectively identify, represent, and amplify content to
and across multiple diverse communities
