The Mercer University Tift College of Education is a community with the mission to advance the study of education and prepare educators to teach, to learn, to create, to discover, to inspire, to empower, and to serve, all for the betterment of a diverse and just society. In support of this mission, the Tift College is seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor of Special Education with experience and credentials in any or all grade bands of P-12 teaching to teach, engage in scholarship, and provide professional and university service in support of the College's Teacher Education programs. Reporting to the Assistant Dean, the successful candidate will be housed at the Henry County Regional Academic Center in McDonough, Georgia and teach across our undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs in elementary, middle grades, and secondary education. The position is a 9-month tenure-track appointment, with the opportunity for summer employment. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate must have qualifications and credentials commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor or higher. The successful candidate is expected to engage in teaching, scholarship, and service. Our regional academic centers (Atlanta, Douglas, Henry, & Macon) house both B.S.Ed. and M.A.T. programs that are hybrid, and the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses that have in-person and synchronous online components in the evening. Our M.Ed. and Ed.S. programs are online, and the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses that are both synchronous and asynchronous online. Our B.S.Ed. programs on the Macon campus are all face-to-face programs, and the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in this program in-person during the day. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in scholarship that supports their instruction and to provide service at the program and unit level. It is also expected that the successful candidate will participate in activities of programmatic development and professional development linked to instructional quality and student success as well as service to the professional and University communities. Additionally, it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to an environment of professionalism and collaboration within the B.S.Ed., M.A.T., M.Ed., and Ed.S. programs.



  • Earned doctorate in Special Education from an accredited college or university
  • Evidence of at least 3 years of successful P-12 teaching experience
  • Evidence of experiences with diverse school populations and culturally responsive curriculum and pedagogy
  • Evidence of experience developing and delivering high-quality instruction in a virtual or blended format, both synchronous and asynchronous
  • Evidence of, or strong potential for, scholarly productivity and a defined research agenda
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to support a culture of collaboration, inclusion, equity, and diversity
  • Evidence of successful university-level teaching (e.g., graduate teaching assistant, adjunct, etc.)


  • Evidence of an additional area of expertise (especially, ESOL, instructional design, social studies, or online teaching endorsement/credential)
  • Experience participating in assessment efforts and continuous improvement at the program and unit levels in either P-12 of university settings
  • Strong evidence of scholarly productivity in special education, teacher education, or a related area
  • Potential to obtain federal, state and/or private grants and contracts and manage funded projects
