The Department of World Language and Cultures in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI invites applications for a Visiting Lecturer in American Sign Language with expertise in teaching ASL at all proficiency levels.  This non-tenure-track appointment is for three semesters: Spring 2022 (January 1 – May 31, 2022), Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 (August 1, 2022 – May 31, 2023). The person in this position will teach four classes per semester; service expectations include outreach to and networking with the Deaf community, interpreting agencies, and practicing interpreters.

Basic Qualifications

 

 

 

 

Required: 

  • MA or higher in ASL Education, ASL Linguistics, or other closely related field
  •  2+ years of teaching ASL experience at the college level
  •  Native or near-native proficiency in ASL
  •  Documented evidence of teaching excellence to meet the needs of diverse learners
  •  Commitment to fostering a diverse and equitable learning environment
  •  Proficiency teaching in multiple modalities—face to face, hybrid, and online (synchronous and asynchronous)
  •  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  •  ASLTA certification
  •  Expertise and experience teaching ASL linguistics courses
  • Proficiency with various instructional technologies, preferably Canvas, Zoom, and GoReact
  • Evidence of involvement in broader institutional activities (e.g., committees, work groups)
  • Involvement in local, state, and national organizations that promote best practices in ASL Education
  • Proficient at navigating cross-cultural communication in an academic setting
  • Involvement in the Deaf community

Salary and Rank

$40,000 - $45,000/FVX
