General Summary
Position: Illinois State University seeks a communicative and
collaborative individual to serve as Director of the School of
Music. The successful candidate will report to the Dean of the
Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts. The Director of the School of
Music is a 12-month tenure track appointment.
Rank, Salary, and Benefits: Full Professor. Salary commensurate
with experience. Benefits include retirement, health, dental, and
vision insurance.
Duties:
The Director of the School of Music is responsible for all matters
relating to the development, implementation, and administration of
policies and programs of the School of Music.
Duties as the Director of the School of Music:
• Supervise appointment, load assignment, and evaluation of faculty
and staff.
• Manage personnel, fiscal, and facilities resources
effectively.
• Lead ongoing efforts to align the school with ISU’s commitment to
equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Promote excellence in instruction, research/creative scholarship,
and service.
• Lead continuing efforts to develop community engagement
opportunities, international initiatives, and scholarly and
creative projects that support the University’s mission for
distinctiveness and excellence (for more information, visit the
University’s strategic, Educate-Connect-Elevate,
StrategicPlan.IllinoisState.edu).
• Lead recruitment initiatives and outreach efforts within the
state of Illinois.
• Contribute to the School and College fundraising and development
efforts.
• Identify opportunities to enhance the vision and mission of the
School.
• Serve on the College Deans and Directors Leadership
Committee.
• Serve as liaison to other units of the Wonsook Kim College of
Fine Arts and Illinois State University administration.
• Serve on the University Academic Chairs and Directors
Council.

The School of Music prides itself in the individualized attention
it provides to students majoring in liberal arts, music business,
music education, music composition, music therapy, music
performance, collaborative piano, and graduate conducting. It is
one of three Schools within the Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts
and has an enrollment of 375 music majors: 300 undergraduate and 75
graduate students. The School of Music has 53 full-time faculty and
50 graduate assistants.
The College:
The School of Music is located within the Wonsook Kim College of
Fine Arts, which also includes the School of Theatre and Dance, the
Wonsook Kim School of Art, and the Creative Technologies
Program. In addition, the College supports the Illinois Shakespeare
Festival at Ewing Cultural Center, the Center for the Performing
Arts, University Galleries, and Central Illinois Regional Airport
Student Art Gallery.

Required Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in Music (Ph.D., Ed.D., D.M.A.) from an accredited institution.
- An established record of creative and/or scholarly productivity and outstanding teaching.
- Successful administrative or supervisory experience in a university-level music unit, with demonstrated knowledge of managing budgets, facilities, personnel, and curriculum.
- Excellent advocacy and communication skills, openness to new ideas, and a demonstrated commitment to shared governance.
- Demonstrated ability to build consitutency through excellent advocacy and communication skills, e.g., through fundraising, public relations, community outreach, and recruitment and retention.
- Current Rank as Full Professor
- Candidates must be able to demonstrate oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position, as mandated by state law.
