The External Scholarships and Undergraduate Research Center supports students seeking research experiences and externally funded academic year, summer and post-baccalaureate opportunities. The Research and Scholarship Advisor will support historically underrepresented minority and first-generation students in these endeavors, as well as the student population at Binghamton more broadly. Students will include scholars in the federally funded program at Binghamton University: the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Scholars Program), a TRiO program aimed to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. This program aims to increase attainment of doctorates by students from underrepresented groups within American society.

The Research and Scholarship Advisor serves as a student advisor, program administrator and outreach and instruction coordinator, and reports to the Director. The approximate allocation of time is 50% Mentoring/Advising, 30% Administration and 20% Outreach. 

Supervision:

The Research and Scholarship Advisor will work closely with the McNair Scholars Coordinator and staff in the Undergraduate Research Center. The Advisor may have the opportunity to supervise student assistants.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts advising sessions with individual students and identifies appropriate support services and opportunities
  • Creates a portfolio of appropriate internal and external research and scholarship opportunities and acts as primary advisor for several programs
  • Plans and implements program functions, including workshops about research and scholarly activities, summer internships, seminars and other educational activities designed to prepare participants for graduate school or career entry
  • Liaises with offices on campus that provide academic and career support for students, such as the Equal Opportunity Program, Student Support Services, Fleischman, Financial Aid, the Center for Civic Engagement, and the Tutoring Center
  • Recruits students and conducts outreach for the office
  • Collects and evaluates data on program participants and program performance, including maintaining information on participant needs and progress.
  • Compiles and submits data for U.S. Department of Education Annual Performance Report as well as other reports
  • Accompanies participants to annual research conferences (two to four nights per trip)
  • Administrative responsibilities as needed, such as purchasing, reimbursements, and coordinating student awards.
  • Other related duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • Progress towards, or completion of, an advanced degree in any field (especially in science, technology, math, or the social sciences)
  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's or other research-based degree preferred
  • Experience with research at the college or post-graduate level
  • Experience advising or teaching students from first generation to college, low income, and historically underrepresented minority backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational, oral, written and computer skills
  • Self-motivated and able to exercise independent judgment
  • Administrative experience preferred (especially in externally funded grant program administration and reporting)
  • Valid Driver's License
