Duties and Responsibilities

This is a 12-month, non-tenure accruing faculty position with 100% teaching FTE in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences available in the Agronomy Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida. Teaching duties will focus on a core course within the undergraduate Plant Science degree: PLS 3004C (Principles of Plant Science, taught summer semester online); a new UF Quest 2 General Education course (taught fall and spring semesters starting in 2023); and AGR 3303 (Genetics. taught spring and fall semesters online). The incumbent will assist in the development and delivery of a new Genetics course for UFOnline. The incumbent will support the Agroecology faculty administrator for the MS and PhD Agronomy graduate students enrolled in the Agroecology concentration and the non-degree certificate programs. Duties include overseeing and coordinating SLO (Student Learning Outcomes) assessment and reporting for MS and PhD Agronomy graduate students in the Agroecology concentration. The successful candidate will serve as primary contact for all successful applicants and one of the academic advisors for students enrolled in our online, non-thesis M.S. program and on-ine graduate certificate programs. The incumbent will serve as the faculty advisor for the Agronomy Soils Club. The assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit.

The successful candidate will engage in scholarly activities related to instruction, including teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, serving on graduate committees, participating in curriculum revision and enhancement, seeking funding for the teaching program, supervising undergraduate and graduate research and creative work, publishing teaching-related scholarship, producing learning tools, and engaging in professional development activities related to teaching and advising. Faculty are encouraged to support and participate in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education.

Background Information

The Agronomy Department ( http://agronomy.ifas.ufl.edu/ ) is a unit in IFAS at the University of Florida and has diverse teaching, research and extension education programs with 19 faculty members located on the Gainesville campus, 14 faculty located across the state at research and education centers, several courtesy faculty and support personnel. Gainesville is an attractive city of about 100,000 in population located in North Central Florida midway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico with many nearby lakes and rivers.

Required:

An M.S. (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Plant Breeding/Genetics, Agronomy, Plant Science, Biology, Ecology or a related field. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication and interpersonal relationships. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.

Preferred:

A PhD (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Plant Breeding/Genetics, Agronomy, Plant Science, Biology, Ecology or a related field. Advanced graduate level course work in genetics, plant breeding, and molecular biology. Teaching experience (both online and in-person), evidence of professional development and scholarship of teaching and learning is preferred. Previous experience in academic advising and administration.
