The Department of Communication Arts, Theatre, and Art at Gordon College invites applications for a tenure-track Professor of Art, open rank. The position begins August 2022.

Ideal candidates are working at the intersection of art, design, technology, and Christian faith. Candidates should have experience in teaching foundations courses in studio art that open design processes and thinking to wider practices across disciplines with emerging media. A background in studio art and professional experience in design are preferred. The position will contribute to the curriculum by teaching courses such as drawing, color theory, and spatial dynamics along with upper-division electives in their area of artistic discipline and senior capstone classes. The Gordon College Art program is seeking candidates who will encourage students towards visionary and imaginative thinking with problem solving skills that can engage culture through diverse artistic practices. The ideal candidate is an interdisciplinary, multimedia artist who feels called to mentor and teach students at a Christian liberal arts college.

The Gordon College Art Program has full-time and adjunct faculty serving 50+ majors in two concentrations, Studio Fine Art and Design. Graduates of our program serve as gallery artists, graphic designers, curators and conservators, illustrators, educators, fashion and interior designers, and landscape architects, among other art-related professions. The program is situated in the Department of Communication Arts, Theatre, and Art. We are located north of Boston in Wenham, Massachusetts, on Cape Ann, three miles from the beach and near historic artist colonies in Gloucester and Rockport.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • a terminal degree in their field, such as an MFA in Design
  • passion for teaching and mentoring a younger generation of artists and art professionals
  • demonstrated mature Christian faith and strong commitment to the Christian mission of the College
  • value for diversity and inclusion as demonstrated in their teaching and scholarship
  • creative and collaborative skills that cross departmental and disciplinary boundaries
  • interest in and evidence of an interdisciplinary spirit––and passion for participation in the liberal arts tradition
  • full-time classroom teaching experience
  • commitment to their own studio and scholarly practice or design career
  • a spirit of collegiality and sense of humor

Gordon College is recruiting accomplished faculty who demonstrate the ability to combine outstanding scholarship and artistic accomplishments with a passion for teaching and mentoring, and who are dedicated to preparing thoughtful Christian women and men for lives of service and leadership worldwide.

As one of the country’s top liberal arts colleges within a vibrant Christian community, Gordon is uniquely positioned to lead the conversation at the intersection of faith and cultural engagement. We need designers, artists, and scholars with a breadth of artistic knowledge and experience, a mature and vibrant faith, and a demonstrated desire to be part of the larger conversations in culture that move beyond the walls of our studios to address the needs of our world.

Interested applicants should submit a Curriculum Vita that includes the names of three references, a design and/or fine art portfolio, and a letter of application addressing their vision for the multimedia nature of the position and their fit with the Christian mission of Gordon College.
