    Department Summary
    The University of Oregon Teaching Engagement Program (TEP), a unit within the Office of the Provost, creates occasions for faculty and graduate student instructors to develop and refresh their pedagogy in dialogue with one another; to engage with campus, national, and scholarly conversations about excellence in higher education; and to use teaching insights to inform UO policy and core curriculum renewal.

    Position Summary
    The Director of STEM Education Initiatives within the UO Teaching Engagement Program (TEP) and Office of the Provost is responsible for facilitating curricular and pedagogical innovation and reform efforts that promote inclusive excellence and student success in STEM. The Director will continue and extend the nationally recognized efforts of UO's Science Literacy Program to improve the outcomes of all UO undergraduates, working with faculty to sharpen UO's articulation of key concepts and skills related to scientific thinking; develop curricular and pedagogical approaches linked to those core concepts and skills; and, with their colleagues in TEP, provide faculty and graduate student teaching development in inclusive and research-informed practices linked to UO's Teaching Excellence Framework.

    The Director of STEM Education Initiatives will help coordinate and consolidate the use of evidence-based pedagogy including structured active learning in science gateway courses with the goal of improving educational outcomes and increasing equity. Moreover, the Director of STEM Education Initiatives will collaborate with schools and colleges on curriculum reform efforts aimed at improving, integrating, and making more navigable curricula within and across STEM majors and the Clark Honors College.

    The Director will pursue external funding opportunities in support of science education initiatives and serve as a connector, linking various sites of STEM education outreach and reform efforts in the University of Oregon campus and wider community.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Ph.D. in a STEM discipline or in science education, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years of demonstrated science teaching excellence at the university level

    Professional Competencies
  • Proven project management skills with known ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated organizational, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work skillfully with faculty members, graduate employees, and academic administrators representing diverse disciplines and experiences

    Preferred Qualifications
  • A thorough working knowledge of the literature on educational development, the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), and learning science research
  • Two years in a professional post-secondary educational development position
  • Familiarity with national STEM curricular reform and inclusive excellence initiatives
  • Experience using data on student achievement to drive pedagogical and curricular reform efforts
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing initiatives and pedagogies to foster inclusive classrooms and curricula
