The Department of English at George Mason University invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor Position in African American literature.

The Department of English offers undergraduates the opportunity to concentrate in a range of areas: Literature, Creative Writing, Cultural Studies, Folklore and Mythology, Film and Media Studies, Linguistics, and Writing and Rhetoric. Along with a BA, we award the only BFA in Virginia. Our graduate curriculum includes MA and MFA programs in several disciplines, along with Ph.D. programs in Linguistics and Writing and Rhetoric. The majority of our classes are small (25 students or fewer), creating the feel of a small liberal arts college while simultaneously providing students the benefits that come with studying at Virginia’s largest state university. Required Qualifications:  

A doctorate in English or an allied field, with evidence of completion by August 2022 Demonstrated expertise in Twentieth/Twenty-first Century African American Women’s Literature, Criticism and Theory Command of at least one of the following genres: fiction, poetry, or drama  Demonstrate potential for excellence in scholarship Strong capacities and dedication to undergraduate and graduate teaching Commitment to inclusivity and engaged mentoring  

Preferred Qualification: 

Secondary expertise in the modern literatures of the African Diaspora (e.g., Caribbean and/or African Literatures)  Interest in forging connections within and beyond the GMU community  

The 2-2 course load will include undergraduate African American literature surveys and advanced courses in the candidate’s area of specialization; graduate surveys and topic-driven seminars; and introductory general literature survey courses. As fully invested department citizens, faculty members are also expected to attend faculty meetings and contribute other service as required. Our new colleague will not only help us grow and develop our existing programs but also introduce us to exciting potential new directions.
