Student Fiscal Services has an outstanding opportunity
for a Director of Student Fiscal Services
The mission of Student Fiscal Services (SFS) is to achieve
exceptional quality in the fiscal administration of student
financial aid programs, University receivables, and University cash
management services. Key processes of SFS include billing and
collecting of tuition and fees, disbursing and reconciling
financial aid, processing electronic transfers with banks and the
federal government, administering the loan origination process,
managing the collection of receivables (loans, aid, and invoices),
oversight of the central billing system (IR), providing financial
information to students and parents, educating students on personal
finances, and supporting staff development.
For the 2021 Fiscal Year, the total financial aid and scholarship
disbursed at UW was approximately $962 million, while the total
payments received was approximately $628 million. The department
serves over 55,000 registered students or over 85,000 active
accounts. The total, biennial Student Fiscal Services operating
budget is $3.5 million.
The Director of Student Fiscal Services currently reports to the
Vice President of Finance. The Director of Student Fiscal Services
is responsible for leading the department, improving processes
through LEAN, and keeping SFS customer-focused and innovative. The
Director is also responsible for building a well-trained and strong
team of leaders and work units to meet customer needs, improving
work processes, and creating a healthy work climate.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide overall leadership and management for Student Financial
Services to achieve the university’s revenue goals by collaborating
with the Office of Planning and Budgeting and other student service
departments in the Provost organization in strategic student
financial policy development, implementation, and program
evaluation.
• Ensure compliance with rules and regulations that govern federal,
state, and institutional student aid programs, privacy of data,
taxation, and collection and banking regulations (including use of
ACH, lockbox, and credit cards for payment)
• Oversight of University-wide cashiering and collection activity
for the UW, billing of receivables, as well as assuring security of
financial information
• Cultivate a commitment to outstanding customer service to
University of Washington current and former students, parents, and
sponsors and University departments
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with
administrative and academic offices, including the Financial Aid
Office, the Registrar’s Office, Continuum College, Housing and Food
Services, Undergraduate Education and other Financial Management
departments
• Work proactively with UW Information Technology staff to ensure
that the heritage computer systems adequately support the mission
and strategies of Student Fiscal Services
• Manage and assert fiscal control of financial aid disbursements
and refunds, tuition receivables, loan disbursements, and
University loan receivables
Leadership and Team Management
• Provide day-to-day leadership and operational management Student
Fiscal Services team.
• Manage and work with a diverse group of individuals; placing
value on creating a diverse team and a culture of inclusivity
• Create and manage the budget with discretionary authority
• Hire and oversee contract vendors as appropriate. Oversee and
approve specifications for bids and cost estimates as provided by
the production managers
• Responsible for management, staff development, and career
enrichment for the Student Fiscal Services team
Process Improvement and UW Financial transformation
Implementation
• Lead and/or participate in various implementation teams to ensure
the requirements of the student business informs the UWFT project
and that the student Fiscal Services team is prepared for the new
system.
• Continual evaluation and improvement of the delivery of services
to students, parents, alumni, academic departments, and colleagues
which include policies, procedures, web self-services,
communications, and staff performance
• Commitment to leading change, to being an advocate for SFS, to
creating innovative services using technology, to educating
students and parents, and to helping SFS become a national leader
in the provision of services.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance,
Accounting, or related field. Equivalent combination of education
and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been
acquired may substitute for degree.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all
minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements,
such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Exceptional leadership, technical, customer service, and
communication skills that reflect a minimum of seven years of
related work experience (including staff supervision) with
increasing responsibilities in higher education.
• Demonstrated experience in working on diverse groups and teams;
respects, values, and contributes to UW Finance and UW’s commitment
to diversity, inclusion, and equity.
• Knowledge of and experience with quality improvement methods
(including process improvement and team facilitation skills).
• Ability to work through peak periods calmly is critical.
• Independent judgment, problem solving and conflict resolution
skills are required, in addition to time management and
organization skills.
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS:
• Knowledge or and/or experience using the University’s financial
systems.
• Experience working in a leadership or lead role in a student
service department.
• Knowledge of LEAN concepts and applications.
• Experience with federal policies and procedures.
