Animal Care Laboratory Technician

Main Campus - Boston, MA

Located in Boston's historic Fenway area, Simmons has a strong tradition of empowering women and of challenging traditional gender roles. The Department of Biology is housed in the College of Natural, Behavioral and Health Sciences (CNBHS). CNBHS is a collegial and supportive community of teachers and scholars within a uniquely multidisciplinary College.

This Boston-based hourly part-time laboratory position reports to the Senior Lab Manager in CNBHS and is non-benefits eligible. The expected schedule is 10 hours/week and may be as follows:
  • Saturday: one hour per day
  • Sunday: one hour per day
  • Monday: 4 hours (evenings possible)
  • Thursday: 4 hours (evenings possible)
  • Holiday work required, including University closings, including Thanksgiving and Winter Break and for weather-related closings. Hours may be reassigned over the longer breaks

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for care of the frog colony. Duties include feeding, monitoring animals, and maintaining water quality as assigned. Other responsibilities include:
  • Tank cleaning
  • Weekly water chemistry checks and appropriate decision-making re water remediation
  • Health checks for abnormalities and sickness and reporting such findings to the Principle Investigator/s and the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager
  • Observation and reporting of environmental changes which could affect animal health or research projects (e.g. temperature and water quality changes)
  • Accurate record keeping as requested
  • Complying with federal, state and local regulations concerning laboratory animals
  • Maintaining regular communication with Principal Investigator/s and Laboratory Supervisor/Manager
  • Other duties as assigned. Future work may include other types of animal colonies and/or care for additional animals.

  • Experience working with aquatic animals preferred
  • Aquarist training preferred
