Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Asian/Global History with a focus in Digital Humanities

Main Campus - Boston, MA
R08142

Located in Boston's historic Fenway area, Simmons has a strong tradition of empowering women and of challenging traditional gender roles. Simmons University was one of the first institutions of higher education to focus on preparing women to pursue independent livelihoods and has evolved to become a university offering a women-centered undergraduate program, with graduate programs open to all.

The Department of History is housed in the Gwen Ifill College of Media, Arts and Humanities. The Gwen Ifill College is a collegial and supportive community of teachers and scholars within a uniquely multidisciplinary College. Simmons faculty and staff are committed to our mission of preparing students to become champions of social justice and leaders in their professions and their communities. This commitment and pride make for a dynamic workplace. As a University focused on inclusive excellence, we seek candidates with a demonstrated ability to work with students across a broad range of social and personal identities and perspectives. We particularly encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups.

The History Department invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in Asian/Global History with a focus in Digital Humanities, beginning Fall 2022. Diverse geographic areas of specialization, including East and South Asia and the Indian Ocean are welcome. Creative pursuit of digital teaching practices and scholarship is also desirable.

The History Department teaches a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses including trans-nationalism, gender history, collective memory, environmental history, and conflict analysis. History contributes to the offerings of the Critical Race, Gender and Cultural Studies and the International Relations programs. In partnership with the School of Library and Information Science, the Department has a robust dual-degree program in History and Archives that attracts students from across the country. This program is looking to build its offerings in digital humanities.

Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to teaching and scholarly excellence. We seek individuals who can contribute to teaching the World History sequence and to those who incorporate trans-Asian, comparative and digital humanities methodologies into their scholarship and public-facing work. Responsibilities include teaching six courses a year to undergraduate and master's students, developing one's scholarship, advising students, and serving on committees that advance the mission of the institution. Faculty in the History Department contribute to PLAN, a general education curriculum, that highlights diversity, civic engagement, interdisciplinarity, leadership, and self-directed learning.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A PhD in History is preferred, but applicants with PhDs in affiliated fields will be considered. ABD candidates are welcome to apply, but the doctorate must be completed by Fall, 2022
  • Demonstrated quality teaching at the university level
  • Evidence and/or promise of scholarly production
  • Interest in digital projects that increase public engagement and expand teaching strategies
