The Search
Milton Academy, an iconic and highly selective coeducational boarding and day school located on 130-acre campus eight miles south of Boston, seeks a transformational and strategic Controller. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a proactive and collaborative individual with accounting and financial acumen to build upon the School’s already strong financial foundation and participate in shaping the future of this exceptional, world-renowned independent school.
Established over two hundred and twenty years ago, Milton Academy has a long history of academic excellence and a commitment to developing strong, independent thinkers. It is a diverse and vibrant school, enrolling students from 29 states and 30 countries, and across a full range of the educational spectrum from Kindergarten through Grade 12. With more than 1,000 students, 500 full and part time employees, total FY 2022 gross revenue of $80 million, and endowment over $400 million, the scale of the enterprise is comparable to many residential liberal arts colleges.
Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer and working in concert with other School leaders and the Board of Trustees, the Controller will embrace and support Milton Academy’s goals through the astute stewardship of financial resources of this distinctive school. The Controller will oversee the School’s business office operations, general accounting, endowment accounting, cash/treasury functions, budget planning, and will attend and support four Committees of the Board (Audit & Risk, Budget & Finance, Buildings & Grounds and Investment).
The ideal candidate will bring an accounting background and expertise gained through increasingly responsible roles in comparably complex not-for-profit and academic settings. Other experience will ideally include business operations, endowment management, financial reporting and analysis, budget oversight and planning, and financial and IT system modernization. Experience in education, either at the secondary school level or in higher education, would be a distinct asset. The successful candidate will be an approachable colleague, with the integrity, warmth, and openness to learning that are consistent with Milton’s values. A master’s degree in accounting, business, or finance is preferred.
