CONTEXT OF JOB:

The Senior Associate Athletic Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), at the University of Delaware is a valued member within the University and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services (DIARS), upholding and embracing the departmental vision of 'Achieving Excellence Together. The Sr. Associate Athletic Director of DEI reports to the Director of Athletics and Recreation Services and the Chief Diversity Officer at the University. In partnership with the department's staff, coaches and student-athletes as well as the Office of Institutional Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity, this new position is charged with developing, managing, and implementing the long-term strategic direction and defining our approach to promoting and fostering an accessible, welcoming, and affirming environment.

As a key member of the Executive Team and the Leadership Team, this role will serve as a discussion partner for DIARS community members, provide thought leadership to the department, serve as a key partner in the university-wide DEI efforts, and have a direct impact on the business and culture.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Planning & Leadership 40%
  • In Year 1, launch a multi-year DEI strategic planning process for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services. In following years, oversee the annual DEI planning and reporting process, including tracking and reporting on all DEI OKR's and progress throughout the FY.
  • Evaluate all business operations, policies, procedures and practices for DIARS and recommend changes that align with our commitment to DEI and address departmental inequities.
  • Represent DIARS and provide thought leadership on multiple D & I committees across campus, in the community, and within the conference and NCAA.
  • Partner with the Office of Disability Support Services to address access concerns relating to participation, facilities and game day operations; and develop and update protocol and processes, on an annual or as needed timeline, to ensure current and best practices related to critical incidents, mental and physical health and safety procedures.
  • Serve as the Deputy Title IX Officer and liaison with the Office of Equity and Inclusion and Title IX, the Office of General Council, and Student Conduct in DIARS.
  • Act as listening partner and first line of support for the various DEI groups and task forces to assist them in completing their DEI objectives and deliverables.
  • Work with DIARS senior staff and coaches to ensure diversity efforts are part of our everyday practice and culture.
  • Consult our talent team on implementing new programs that attract and retain a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on topics related to diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging.
  • Intentionally incorporate the practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion in review of all DIARS collateral and communication practices.

Project Management 25%
  • Develop and drive a comprehensive roadmap for the continued impact of our DEI strategic plan. This includes areas such as hiring and retaining a diverse staff and leading anti-racist practices.
  • Design, facilitate and implement programs and training that align with the University's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion for staff and student-athletes.
  • Lead the effective progress of DEI initiatives and scheduling of complex meetings and retreats, which may require coordination across the DIARS community, anticipating needs, and exercising discretion and judgment as top priorities.

Research, Evaluation, & Assessment 20%
  • Lead assessment of DIARS diversity efforts using a range of data-gathering and analysis approaches to ensure progress in our DEI strategic plan.
  • Identify meaningful metrics, tools and analytics to track progress, provide accountability, and evaluate diversity and inclusion performance and effectiveness.
  • Systematically collect and assess quantitative and qualitative KPIs, including activities, characteristics, and outcomes of programs, in order to improve program effectiveness and inform future planning.
  • Lead discussions on analysis and improvement of data acquisition, collection, and usage.
  • Coordinate multiple input requests from university, including collecting information for assessment and planning purposes, drafting documents for review, and contributing to study reports by preparing tables, graphs, charts, or other displays as requested.
  • Conduct semi-structured qualitative interviews and/or focus groups as needed.
  • In collaboration with the Marketing & Communications team create quarterly newsletter, infographic snapshot and annual report to keep staff updated on DEI progress and activities.
  • Complete NCAA annual sponsorship report.

Title IX Deputy 15%
  • Lead the DIARS community in fostering a culture of mutual respect, understanding, inclusion, and justice.
  • Provide leadership and awareness of current University policies and practices as well as training and education for staff, coaches, and student-athletes in support of the policies.
  • Identify gaps and consider addition

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and minimum of seven years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse backgrounds, especially people from different racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments.
  • Effectively manage institutional resistance and inertia.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and understanding of group dynamics.
  • Successful track record of establishing credibility and trust with a diverse client group, including senior leaders.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, creative problem solving, judgment, negotiating, influencing, and strategic decision-making skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise on and implement organizational change. Demonstrated end-to-end experience in the development and execution of organization-wide initiatives.
  • Demonstrated passion for higher education environments and activities with a particular focus on intercollegiate athletics.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
