Governors State University is seeking to hire an International Student Advisor (Immigration Specialist), who will serve as a Designated School Official ( DSO ) and Alternate Responsible Officer ( ARO ). This position will advise international students on immigration matters and process I-20 updates. The advisor will assist the Primary Designated School Official ( PDSO ) in SEVIS maintenance, self-audits, and federally mandated registration/reporting, and will also provide support to the Assistant Director, as needed, with cultural programming and events, including international student orientation.
Essential Responsibilities:
45% Review, maintain and process all documents and records as required by United States Department of Homeland Security ( DHS ) during an international student’s study at Governors State University. Maintain up-to-date understanding of immigration regulations and other federal, state and local laws or policies affecting non-immigrant students. Coordinate information needed for issuance of I-20 documents. Advise current and future international students, as well as those on OPT, on maintaining, changing, or reinstating their immigration status. Assist with the planning and execution of international student orientation each semester. Collaborate as needed on recruitment strategies for prospective applicants from other countries.
45% Serve as Designated School Official ( DSO ) and Alternate Responsible Officer ( ARO ). Responsible for international student immigration advising within the Office of International Services. Process SEVIS applications and general office administration. Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding immigration and other matters pertinent to international education at Governors State University.
10% Assist with various projects, including developing and updating information and website materials. Work collaboratively with other student services professionals to develop and design co-curricular programs. Assist with training student workers to complete office-wide tasks/projects as necessary. Other duties and responsibilities as needed.

Salary Range: $40,716.00 to $46,823.40.
(This is a non-unionized position. Salary starts at the base and is determined based on Education and Experience exceeding the minimum qualifications). Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED : DOCUMENTATION CONFIRMING HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION OR EQUIVALENT MUST BE ATTACHED FOR CONSIDERATION OF THIS POSITION, COLLEGE / UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPTS MAY BE SUBSTITUTED (See “Special instructions to applicants” section below).

1. One (1) year (12 months) of responsible work experience in immigration counseling and visa application filing or in a higher education setting performing international student/scholar advising, international student recruitment or international student admissions.

2. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the categories below:
A. Progressively more responsible work experience in immigration counseling and visa application filing or in a higher education setting performing international student/scholar advising, international student recruitment, or international student admissions;
B. College coursework leading to a major in business administration, education administration, one of the social or behavioral sciences, a foreign language or one related to foreign affairs/service.
 60 semester hours equal one (1) year/12 months
 90 semester hours equal two (2) years/24 months
 120 semester hours or a Bachelor’s degree equals three (3) years/36 months

Note: A Master’s degree in Education Administration, Counseling, International Relations, International Development, Cross Cultural Communication or Communications meets Credential #2. Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field and two years of immigration advising experience in a higher education setting/ international student and scholar office.

• Familiarity with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System ( SEVIS ); knowledge of SEVIS procedures and processes.
• Knowledge of FERPA
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in international and intercultural situations
• Demonstrated persistence in overcoming obstacles and achieving challenging goals
• Demonstrated accuracy and thoroughness
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and sensitivity working with a diverse student body
