FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences at the City College Center for Worker Education/CUNY invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Human Rights to start in Fall 2022. Candidates for this position should be actively engaged in researching, teaching, and building networks in human rights, in one or more of the following areas: armed insurgency and transnational radicalism; genocide; global governance; climate change and migration; and social movements. In addition, they should develop professional networks among human rights non-profits and advocacy groups, as well as international institutions. The successful candidate will be able to integrate theory and practice in an interdisciplinary curriculum and create a public facing multi-media strategy to recruit students and profile the human rights program more generally.

The department offers an interdisciplinary BA program in Liberal Arts for working adults and an MA in the Study of the Americas. Responsibilities include teaching 4-5 courses per year; helping to plan and implement curriculum for the Human Rights program both at the undergraduate and graduate levels; mentoring and advising students interested in human rights careers or graduate study; and building internship and career networks for graduates.

Expected duties include: teaching, research, and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise noted above; sharing responsibility for committee and department assignments; performing administrative and supervisory tasks as may be assigned; programming, developing, and coordinating public-facing human rights conferences and events through multi-media platforms.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in Political Science or related interdisciplinary field with a background in human rights, a commitment to engaged scholarship, and a record of ongoing professional development as a teacher and scholar. Also required are the ability to teach successfully; produce traditional scholarship or creative, interdisciplinary work for new media platforms; and cooperate with others for the good of the institution and to build the department’s human rights profile through a proactive networking and media strategy. Applicants with experience teaching adult, non-traditional urban students are especially encouraged.
