VPA serves approximately 1,800 undergraduate students in 25 undergraduate degree programs and approximately 200 graduate students in 17 degree programs. The Office of Academic and Career Advising within the College of Visual and Performing Arts ( VPA ) is currently seeking an assistant director of career development to develop and execute career related initiatives.

This position is an integral part of a student-centered office which includes career services and academic advising. The position reports to the director of academic and career advising and oversees career services related processes and procedures for the College. The assistant director of career services will work closely with the directors/chairs of the: School of Art, Department of Communication & Rhetorical Studies, Department of Creative Arts Therapy, School of Design, Department of Drama, Setnor School of Music, and Department of Transmedia. In addition to the seven VPA departments/schools, the assistant director will also work closely with central career services, community and industry partners, alumni and other key stakeholders to facilitate customized student career development in VPA . Qualifications
A Master’s degree and at least 3 to 5 years of relevant experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience in a university or a professional setting. Job Specific Qualifications

  • Ability and motivation to remain updated on best practices, career development, relevant industry trends.
  • A demonstrated ability to work within a team as well as independently.
  • Ability to work collaboratively; demonstrated willingness to take initiative and aptitude to work independently.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and oversee events. Skilled in use of online career resources, networking platforms, career center management system and other online resources.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain professional relationships with students, alumni, employers, colleagues, faculty and staff.
  • Must have excellent written, verbal and oral communication skills.
  • Technical/computer skills needed include (but not limited to): experience using Microsoft Office Suite, electronic communications, databases, and career services related software/platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills are required.
  • Familiarity with utilizing social media for networking and/or entrepreneurial branding preferred. Understanding of the gig economy is a plus.
  • Familiar with Handshake or equivalent career services platform is a plus.
Responsibilities
Employer, Corporate and Alumni Relations:
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure a high-quality recruiting program that reflects the needs and expectations of VPA students and employers representing VPA disciplines and industries. By utilizing faculty contacts, alumni, outreach, networking, etc.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with new and existing employers (including alumni) to provide students with experiential opportunities, mentoring, and/or post graduate employment.
  • Establish new employer contacts and strengthen current employer contacts through outreach activities such as cold calls, mass mailings, and individual employer visits.
  • Develop and maintain database of employers.
  • Facilitate relationships between employers and the VPA community, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, etc.
  • In collaboration with VPA Advancement Office, identify and engage with potential corporate partners.
Planning:
  • Work closely with Director and VPA career services staff to oversee and implement VPA career development strategies to serve students.
  • Proactively develop and implement strategies designed to increase employment opportunities for all VPA students including specific populations such as international students, graduate students and underserved populations.
Career Services Support:
  • Support the planning of events and programming including career fairs to provide career development and other employment and networking opportunities for students.
  • Offer individual career advising appointments and group workshops for students and alumni.
  • Assist students (e.g., internship searches, finding mentors, career transitions, resume/application material critiques, job search strategies, networking tips, interview preparation).
  • Work collaboratively with the academic advising team to enhance the student experience.
  • In coordination with VPA career services team, develop and maintain career specific resources for students (e.g. a career guide for each school/department, webpage with links to creative staffing agencies, exhibition opportunities, residency opportunities, etc.).
  • Develop, facilitate and deliver presentations to current and prospective students.
  • Stay current on best practices, requirements and needs of special populations (e.g. international students¿ requirements for employment and internships). Attend training workshops on all relevant student needs and issues.
  • Remain current with career services best practices (and relevant professional memberships).
Alumni engagement:
  • Project lead for alumni mentor program.
  • Engage with alumni to support mentoring program, internship opportunities, employment opportunities, panel discussions, and other networking and/or experiential opportunities for students.
  • Tracking metrics on all career-related outcomes, such as student appointments, career education engagement, internships, and placement into career and graduate school. Administer and interpret career-related assessments.
  • Collect these data points utilizing the university-wide shared career technology software. Report metrics to supervisor and to central career office as requested.
