Search for the Dean of the College of Business

Las Cruces, New Mexico

New Mexico State University (NMSU), a Minority-Serving and Hispanic-Serving Institution, and a land-grant and NASA Space-Grant university with the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, seeks an innovative, inclusive, and strategic leader to serve as the next Dean of the College of Business (COB). The Dean will join NMSU at an exciting time as the university embarks on implementing a transformative strategic plan to ensure they remain competitive in an ever-changing higher-education landscape. The new Dean will have the opportunity to work closely with NMSU leadership and the COB community in catalyzing a new vision and strategy for the COB that honors NMSU’s land-grant mission, expands business partnerships, enhances the social mobility and success of its diverse student body, promotes innovation and community building, and inspires the COB community for the future.

NMSU is one of the most diverse land-grant universities in the nation, situated near the Mexican border on the Central and Latin American corridor. There are 23 tribes that have ancestral homeland ties to New Mexico including 19 Pueblos, the Navajo Nation and the Jicarilla Apache Nation, Mescalero Apache Tribe, and the Fort Sill Apache Tribe. In addition to its main campus in Las Cruces, the institution includes community colleges across the state, cooperative extension offices located in each of New Mexico's 33 counties, 12 agriculture research and science centers, and an expanding distance education program. NMSU Las Cruces campus enrolls approximately 14,300 students, with New Mexico residents comprising 70% of the student population.

The COB currently serves 1,644 students, including 1,385 undergraduate students and 259 graduate students, and has five academic departments: Accounting and Information Systems; Economics, Applied Statistics and International Business; Finance; Management; and Marketing. The COB’s mission is to transform lives by providing highly respected programs, instruction, and scholarly activities that drive economic, social, educational, and community development for New Mexico’s diverse populations. The college is proud to offer business and accounting programs that are AACSB-accredited. The college serves a very diverse student population, including many first-generation, part-time, and working adult students.

It is a pivotal time to be joining the COB community as they are seeking a Dean who will bring fresh ideas and energize the COB with new possibilities. They are looking to the Dean to find new ways to enhance inclusion, academic excellence, and student success; expand and augment online and in-person course offerings, degree programs, and certificate programs; deepen connections among staff, faculty, and alumni; grow and sustain new and innovative community partnerships; and expand outreach to the business communities throughout New Mexico and in El Paso, Texas, as well as along the border into Mexico, due to their close proximity. This is an opportunity for the Dean to be entrepreneurial with academic programs, interdisciplinary collaborations, revenue generation, community engagement, and economic development to transform lives and ensure the COB continues to increase its socioeconomic impact in the Las Cruces community, New Mexico, the Borderlands, and beyond.

The Dean will be expected to address the following opportunities and challenges:

  • Lead the COB’s development of a strategic vision that fosters a sense of community and promotes innovation
  • Create a sustainable and collaborative organizational infrastructure in the COB
  • Strengthen the COB’s position as a critical partner to New Mexico’s and Borderlands’ business communities
  • Ensure students have the academic programs, skills, and experiences necessary for the workforce
  • Steward the College’s reaccreditation process to completion
  • Secure resources to achieve the College’s strategic goals

NMSU seeks an experienced leader with outstanding management skills, a clear understanding of the academic enterprise, prior administrative experience, and strong communication and relationship-building abilities. The Dean should have an earned terminal degree in business management, economics, finance, or a related field of business, and a distinguished professional record appropriate to an appointment at the rank of full professor.
