Southern Connecticut State University is seeking a dynamic individual for the Immigration Specialist position within the Office of International Education.  As an intentionally diverse and student-centered university, Southern is committed to academic excellence, access, social justice, and service for the public good. The Immigration Specialist provides support services to inbound J and H Visa international students and faculty (and dependents), as well as risk management advising for outbound study abroad students and faculty.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Develops systems for providing and tracking all immigration paperwork relative to J-1 Exchange Visitors.

Maintains updated records in SEVIS for all J-1 Exchange Visitors. Produces all SEVIS reports for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program, including annual reports and redesignation applications.

Reviews and processes all paperwork relative to the initial issuance of all DS-2019s for J-1 Exchange Visitors.

Provides necessary immigration advising for J-1 Exchange Visitors both before entry in the U.S., after port-of-entry arrival, and for the duration of their stay (in J status) in the U.S.

Serves as the University’s H-1B liaison and adviser, and processes all H-1B petitions for the University’s non- immigrant resident faculty.

Supports the OIE in all student-based initiatives. Works with OIE staff to increases campus and community awareness and support for the University’s international initiatives.

Assists with overseas student risk management programs and updates faculty course abroad manuals as directed.

Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred. Two years’ experience interacting with international students and faculty in a university environment, good organizational skills, significant computer literacy and excellent organizational and communication skills required. Knowledge of SEVIS, J-Visa immigration issues, H visa immigration issues, and risk management in international study strongly preferred. Must be a Citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States.

International experience, competency in at least one foreign language and knowledge of at least one foreign culture preferred. An equivalent combination of credential and/or experience may also be considered.

These qualifications may be waived for individuals with appropriate alternate experience.
