Position Summary:
The Superintendent at Ralph Myhre Golf Course is responsible for the daily and annual operation of the golf course and maintenance program. The responsibilities include but are not limited to: Turf/Horticulture maintenance programs, improvement projects, course set up, personnel management, financial planning/management, member relations, scheduling irrigation times/responsible for irrigation maintenance, pesticide applications/recording, and keeping strong relationships with other involved departments on campus.
The Superintendent will work diligently to create a positive work/play environment for his staff, members, guests, other staff at and on the golf course. This includes open lines of communications to the above parties to ensure the best experience at Ralph Myhre Golf Course.
Essential Functions:
Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
· Responsible for all aspects of the Golf Maintenance and Agronomic operations on the golf course and surrounding landscape daily. This includes management of all personnel on the maintenance department, as well as, supervising/advising the entire outdoor services crew. · Works with, plans, and advises the Business Manager and Golf Pro on any golf course related maintenance that will affect business and or play.· Works closely with Business Manager, golf pro and other upper management staff on golf course needs, financial strategy, fiscal responsibility, and capital budget items/new equipment needs.
· Majority of position is administrative: filing reports, making purchases, tracking budget, obtaining project estimates, communicating with representatives, and placing orders. · Manages projects which includes …. Vendor selection, ensuring work is completed on time and to specifications, etc…. · Contracts, supervises and evaluates maintenance contractors. · Manages a portion of the the overall golf course budget and is responsible for finding ways to save and use the allocated budget in the best interest of the operation. This often includes phone calls, e-mails and in person meetings with golf equipment and supply sales people. · Manages application of pesticide and fertilizers. · Develops and implements safety and educational training programs and stays abreast of new information and technology as it relates to operational improvement. · Is required to attend regular industry conferences and seminars to maintain credits for required certifications.· Manages and participates in all aspects of construction and maintenance on the grounds.
· Manages staff needs for the Golf Course Maintenance department. This includes hiring, disciplinary actions, training, scheduling, performance reviews and providing daily direction.· Responsible for educating, training, and enforcing all rules/regulations through the college handbook, safety companies, and proper equipment videos/hands on training. · Must be a self-starting problem solver with the ability to work independently.
General Responsibilities:
· Responsible for the maintenance of the turf, flowers beds, and trees on the golf course and around the clubhouse.
· Works closely with the gardener and arborist to assist in projects such as new plantings and tree removal.
· Manages and controls all irrigation and irrigation run times on the course throughout the year. This also includes the startup and shut down procedures at the beginning and end of each season.
· Works closely with the Business Manager in developing the annual operating budget.
· Supervises and participates in all agronomic applications made to the playing surfaces (fertilizers and pesticides.)
- This also includes the proper recording and reporting to the State of Vermont on an annual basis to be in compliance with all state laws.
- Responsible for financial strategy and ordering the annual company order of all chemical applications.
· Maintains records and reporting in compliance with the annual operating budget, Procurement card, and Middlebury Colleges Oracle finance system.
· Orders all necessary tools, parts, and supplies as needed for optimal performance on the course.
· Schedules all maintenance practices around everyday play, tournaments, and outings to minimize disruption.
· Must be willing to work flexible hours which include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications
Education:
· Associates degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, or related field preferred.· Pesticide Applicators License required - or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
· Prefer Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Interpersonal skills to resolve conflict and work with supervisors, officials, employees, members, and public.
· Skill in recruiting, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel. · Knowledge of safe use, mixing, and applications of agronomic applications.· Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules, regulations, and method of play. · Strong ability to multi task.· Ability to anticipate personnel, equipment, and material requirements related to golf course maintenance and repair assignments. · Ability to provide excellent customer service and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and all members of the general public.
· Ability and knowledge to lay out irrigation patterns, drainage patterns, construct tees and/or greens.
Experience:
· Knowledge of management and maintenance of all equipment, tools, irrigation system, and all turf related applications.· 3-5 years experience as a Golf Superintendent or 1st Assistant
Physical Demands:
Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping and pulling.
