Open Rank Clinical Professor in Elementary Social Studies Education

Position

The Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Iowa invites applications for an academic-year clinical-track faculty position at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor in the Social Studies Education program. The position will begin August 17, 2022.

Description 

This is a full-time academic-year (9 month) clinical track faculty position with an initial three-year appointment. Renewal is possible, dependent on recurrent funding and performance. We seek an individual with broad expertise in elementary education, specifically with experience in elementary social studies and teacher education. The successful applicant will be expected to teach the equivalent of four courses each semester or three courses with other program-related responsibilities. This will include supervising and teaching elementary social studies courses. It will also involve teaching and support in our elementary education program, such as field experiences or other general teacher education coursework. Participation in grant activities, such as proposing and managing professional development grants, will also be important. We seek applicants who actively engage in equity, inclusivity, and anti-racist education.

Education Requirements

Prospective candidates must have earned a doctorate in Social Studies Education or a related discipline by August 1, 2022.

Required Qualifications

(1) Experience in elementary social studies education in K12 settings; (2) demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and anti-racist education; (3) potential for securing external funds for professional and program development; and (4) demonstrated commitment to working and collaborating with culturally, linguistically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse populations.

Desirable Qualifications

(1) Evidence of excellent teaching skills in teacher education in higher education; (3) licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in Elementary Education; (3) experience in building partnerships with local schools and communities; and (4) a record of securing external funds for research, training, and program development.

Responsibilities

Major responsibilities include instruction and supervision in elementary social studies education courses; participating in grant activities to secure funding for professional and curriculum development in addition to other professional productivity; and establishing connections with departments across the UI campus, local schools, and communities. The successful candidate will be involved with local, state, and national activities that support social studies education as well as diversity and equity in teacher education. They will also participate in service to the program, department, college, and university. Faculty are required to engage in at least 4 hours per semester of collaboration with teachers in contributing to instruction in K12 classrooms.

The Department of Teaching and Learning (T & L) at the University of Iowa includes over 35 faculty members and 900 students. The Elementary Education Program provides instruction to over 300 students each year. The Social Studies undergraduate and graduate programs (MA, MAT) emphasize an interdisciplinary and inquiry-based approach to social education. The Social Studies Education program is committed to preparing educators to teach history and the social sciences in order to prepare students for active participation in a multicultural democracy. Areas of emphasis include democratic education, global perspectives, and social justice. The Department has an active Solidarity Committee to support and guide work on equity, justice, and anti-racist education the Teacher Education Program.
