The University of Dayton seeks a collaborative, and strategic academic leader to serve as chairperson of the Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Sciences beginning July 1, 2022. The chairperson will be hired with tenure and at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

 

About the department and the University

The Department of Physics is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences and offers a Bachelor of Science in Physics, a Bachelor of Science in Physical Science, and a Bachelor of Science in Physics-Computer Science. The department currently has 22 undergraduate majors, 13 tenure-line faculty, 2 visiting assistant professors, 2 lecturers, 4 educational laboratory instructors/supervisors, and a small number of adjunct faculty. Several faculty members have joint appointments in the Department of Electro-Optics and Photonics housed in the School of Engineering. The department has strong ties to The Hanley Sustainability Institute of the University of Dayton and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) located at the nearby Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Faculty members have active collaborations with researchers from other departments within the University of Dayton, at AFRL, and with colleagues across the nation and the world. Faculty research is supported through grants and contracts from a wide variety of funding agencies and mechanisms, including NSF, NIH, ONR, ARO, AFOSR, AFRL, SBIR, STTR, and other sources. The department emphasizes strong undergraduate research and supports and/or advises a significant number of PhD and MS students from outside the department. Students with most majors offered by the University take one or more introductory physics courses. In a typical semester the enrollment in introductory physics courses numbers more than one thousand. The department features several innovative programs including the Review Leader program and the Summer Research program.

 

Continuing on its trajectory of growth, UD enrolls 11,300 students, including 8,225 full-time undergraduates.  UD is one of the nation’s largest Catholic universities, and the largest private university in Ohio. Embedded in the dynamic city of Dayton, OH, and grounded in its Catholic, Marianist tradition, UD provides education to develop the whole student and is committed to experiential learning.

About the position

The chairperson is responsible for administrative, curricular, co-curricular and budgetary facets of the department. The Chair will have an opportunity to lead the department in efforts to expand a strong and collegial undergraduate physics program; hire and mentor faculty; foster vibrant, funded, research programs supported by undergraduate and graduate students; expand a burgeoning effort in diversity, equity, and inclusion; and maintain and strengthen physics courses taken by students of most majors in the University. The successful candidate should be an inspiring, energetic, and well-organized leader who can effectively engage with all faculty, staff, and students within the department and who can build and sustain partnerships across the University and in the broader community.

 Minimum qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Physics or closely related area.
  • Successful Leadership experience in higher education.
  • Articulated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Effective written communication skills.
  • Strong record of effective teaching as the instructor of record in the North America system of higher education.
  • Strong research record.
  • Strong record of service to the department or broader university community.
  • Appointment at the rank of professor includes all of the above qualifications and requires a record of teaching, research, and service commensurate with the criteria for promotion to the rank of Professor in the Department of Physics and in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Dayton

 

Preferred qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Ph.D. in physics.
  • Successful Leadership experience in any or all of the following:
    • the North American higher education system
    • a department that grants BS or BA physics degrees
    • in a graduate program
    • an administrative role
  • Successful Experience in any or all of the following:
    • collaboratively establishing and implementing strategic priorities
    • recruiting, mentoring, and retaining diverse students
    • recruiting, mentoring, and retaining diverse faculty and staff
    • mentoring undergraduate students in research
    • mentoring graduate students in research
    • of interdisciplinary engagement and external partnerships
    • securing extramural funding for research
    • enhancing existing programs and developing curricular and co-curricular initiatives, and pedagogical innovations
    • mentoring faculty through tenure and promotion
  • Significant demonstrated experience in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Demonstrated, excellent administrative, financial management, and organizational skills
  • Effective oral communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to breadth of education including educating the whole person in the Marianist tradition and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession
