Job Summary:

The Marist College Education Department seeks candidates for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Education to begin in Fall 2023.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements for the position include an earned doctorate in literacy or a related field from an accredited university. In particular, we seek faculty with expertise in methods for teaching elementary literacy. A background in the science of reading, content area literacy and/or teaching emergent bilinguals is also preferred.

The successful candidate will have teacher certification, teaching experience in P-12 schools, and a student-centered approach to preparing future educators. Applicants should be able to model culturally responsive pedagogical approaches across all courses and foster inclusive classroom environments. Of note, Marist has committed to building a new state-of-the art education methods classroom with adjoining maker space. Construction begins in the summer of 2022.

Essential Functions:

Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in P – 12 education methods and literacy instruction. Supervision and assessment of student teachers may also be included. Applicants should have an active research agenda that leads to high-quality peer reviewed publications and the ability to mentor student projects. Also responsible for advisement of students and participation as part of a departmental team engaged in continuous improvement efforts.

About the Department:

The Education Department is a member of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences along with departments for psychology, criminal justice, and social work. The Education Department offers a variety of teacher preparation programs including: (1) elementary education, grades 1-6, with dual certification for students with disabilities (2) a birth through second grade add-on teacher certification, and (3) adolescence education, grades 7 – 12, with dual certification for students with disabilities in eight content areas (English, math, social studies, biology, chemistry, earth science, Spanish, and French). The department also offers an advanced master’s degree program in three delivery models: 5-year, summer hybrid, and campus-based formats.

The Education Department and the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences are committed to advancing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive climate.
