ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MUSIC

Lehigh University invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Music, with specialties in wind instrument performance, ensemble directing, and research in related areas, effective August 15, 2022. The ideal candidate will have a music theory background and be able to teach elementary harmony. Qualified applicants should hold appropriate terminal degrees in music with a minimum of a Master’s degree, and demonstrate commensurate experience and promise in instrumental directing (preferably wind ensemble or band),  and track record in scholarship, creative work, pedagogy, recruitment and growing instrumental music programs. The successful candidate will exemplify artistic leadership and excellence as a conductor, hold high standards in performance as evidenced by peer recognition and invitations to conduct, and demonstrate appropriate depth and breadth in a broad range of music genres and styles.

The successful candidate will join a department of currently ten faculty and staff, and approximately thirty performing-teaching affiliates.  The faculty member will conduct and direct the wind band program, teach courses in areas of expertise, share teaching responsibilities in core music courses, and supervise capstone and independent studies. Core responsibilities include directing The Wind Ensemble at Lehigh University, the LU Symphonic Band, and The Marching 97.  The Marching 97 is a student-run organization, with the faculty director acting as advisor to The 97 and liaison to the University and Booster Club.  The director actively coordinates the efforts of The 97 with athletics, development, and administration.

The Department of Music at Lehigh University offers all students, regardless of their area of studies, a comprehensive range of classes, private lessons, and ensemble participation, with a rigorous yet flexible curriculum for music majors and minors. We are housed in a multi-venue performing arts center with a 1,000-seat concert hall, recording studio, classrooms, and rehearsal and practice spaces (https://zoellner.cas.lehigh.edu/).

We expect the faculty member to participate fully in a liberal arts environment, and whose teaching, creative activity, and/or professional experience address diversity, equity, or questions of interest to historically underrepresented or underserved communities.
