Research and Design Engineer- Thin Film Vacuum Deposition Equipment Design and Development -



Researches, plans, and implements the design, construction, assembly, testing, troubleshooting and maintenance of research tools and equipment.

  1. Designs and builds scientific equipment and/or instruments to facilitate research efforts.
  2. Compiles and analyzes operational, test, and research data to implement research and design concepts into equipment design and construction.
  3. Provides electronic and system level troubleshooting of prototype devices to aid product development and improves existing equipment to achieve desired functionality.
  4. Drafts designs and builds prototypes of scientific equipment and/or instruments.
  5. May write technical documentation and related reports as needed.
  6. Evaluates and recommends design modifications.
  7. Provides technical support, guidance and expertise to students and faculty staff regarding all phases of front-end engineering, including design, construction and implementation.
  8. Tests components, instruments and equipment and provides solutions to technical problems.
  9. Performs other job-related duties as required.

The University of Houston (UH) is seeking to fill a position with experience in equipment design and construction engineering especially for thin film vacuum deposition processes. The position will support research in the Selva Research Group ( https://selva.me.uh.edu/ ) directed by Prof. Venkat Selvamanickam in 6,000 sq.ft. laboratories on UH campus and a 17,500 sq. ft facility at the Technology Bridge of the University of Houston. High-caliber candidates are sought for design, construction, improvement, and troubleshooting of thin film vacuum deposition process tools for metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), magnetron sputtering, electron-beam evaporation, and ion beam assisted deposition. The position entails implementation of concepts developed by R&D scientific staff into equipment design and construction. Additional responsibility includes troubleshooting and improvement of existing equipment to achieve desired functionality.

Applicants should hold a Bachelor degree in engineering with a strong background in mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering. Candidates with AAS degree with substantial relevant work experience will also be considered. 5+ years of experience is required in design, construction and troubleshooting of thin film vacuum deposition equipment. 5+ years of experience in design, construction and troubleshooting of control systems for motion, heat, vacuum, flow, power, RF, and deposition components and software expertise to automate the equipment is required. Expertise in design software, particularly SOLIDWORKS, is required. Experience working in an R&D or technology-driven environment is a plus.

Qualifications :

Bachelors and 7 years experience

Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed.Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of directly job-related experience.
