Postdoctoral Research Associate

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Environmental Ecosystems Laboratory (pintolab.com) located in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join their research team led by Dr. Ameet Pinto. This research team focuses on monitoring and management of microbial communities in drinking water systems.

Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Postdoctoral Research Associate will involve design, development, testing, and validation of protocols for targeted and non-targeted characterization of complex microbial communities in the urban water cycle using nanopore sequencing. The focus of this work is to develop assays that can be carried out by non-expert users and automated, rapid data-analysis workflows that can provide interpretable and actionable microbiological information to the end user (e.g., water utility operators). This position will combine wet-lab experiments and computational work to develop microbial characterization assays of interest, followed by field-based testing. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will have the opportunity to gradually take on the role of mentoring graduate and undergraduate students and also contribute to and benefit from several ongoing research projects in the areas drinking water microbial ecology, optical sensing, and nitrogen-cycle microbiology. Further, this position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with multiple industry partners in the drinking water, wastewater, resource recovery, and bioenergy sectors; this is an excellent opportunity for the post-doctoral research associate to build their professional research network.

Qualifications:
Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar. Successful candidates should have research experiences and skills in molecular biology (e.g., qPCR/PCR, library prep for high-throughput sequencing), environmental microbiology (e.g., metagenomics/transcriptomics), and/or bioinformatics (e.g., genome centric analyses of metagenomic data). A track record in the development and implementation of bioinformatics tools and/or nanopore sequencing would be ideal and demonstrated proficiency in R and/or Python is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in environmental engineering, environmental biotechnology, bioengineering, or related STEM fields is preferred.

Salary Grade:
10
