About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University, College of Professional Studies invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track, Assistant Teaching Professor or Assistant Academic Specialist position to work with the Master of Professional Studies in Informatics and the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. The position will remain open until filled by a qualified candidate.

The mission of our programs is to prepare students to be successful in IT applications and management positions through a balanced curriculum that combines technical skills training with an understanding of business fundamentals and strategic thinking regarding IT innovation. Our undergraduate curriculum focuses on a broad foundation of hands-on technical skills, whereas the MPS in Informatics highlights key IT management and strategic thinking skills needed in higher level positions within the organization.

Our programs are deeply rooted in experiential learning that is closely linked to professional applications in the work force. This prepares the students with the opportunity to apply classroom learnings to professional domains or disciplines (e.g. business, marketing, research).

The position offering is a full-time, non-tenure track, one-year renewable appointment as an Assistant Teaching Professor. The candidate will be expected to teach as a content expert in Information Technology, with particular expertise in networking, cloud computing and infrastructure. Software development and/or Database experience is also desired.

The candidate is further expected to advance work in close collaboration with other Faculty, Northeastern campus locations outside of Boston, and other departments such as Academic Quality Assessment, Online Experiential Learning, Marketing, Enrollment, and Admissions to propel the program forward.

The position is based in Boston, Massachusetts; however, there is a possibility of traveling periodically throughout the year to our Northeastern campus locations outside of Boston, including Seattle, WA, Charlotte, NC, and other locations (the College would cover travel and lodging costs). Courses are taught in multiple formats including online, hybrid and the traditional classroom. Faculty enjoy a collegial work environment that allows for work-life balance, and are expected to be available to students, whether in-person or online. Opportunities exist for additional compensation through other non-teaching activities. Faculty contribute to the College's mission through teaching, service and scholarship.

This is a non-tenure track joint undergraduate and graduate appointment. Up to 50% of the candidate's time will be allocated towards teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels (teaching load is subject to periodic reviews by the undergraduate and graduate units and the college); actual course load may vary with other responsibilities.

At the undergraduate level, responsibilities include:

  • Undergraduate teaching of a minimum of 2 semester courses throughout the academic year

  • Maintaining a technical environment for students to host web sites and applications developed in the undergrad software development courses

  • Establishing and maintaining an environment for students working on introductory networking and cybersecurity coursework

  • Acting as a Subject Matter Expert in the development and refinement of undergraduate networking and security Master Courses

  • Participating in undergraduate Quality Assessment activities

    At the graduate level -

  • Graduate teaching of a minimum of 3 quarter courses throughout the academic year (in addition to undergrad teaching.)

  • Maintaining virtual environments such as AWS or Azure as needed for graduate students working on experiential capstone projects.

  • Establishing and maintaining a virtual environment for the Cloud Computing and Big Data courses.

  • Acting as a Subject Matter Expert in the development of new courses; refining and improving existing courses

  • Participating in graduate Quality Assessment activities.

    Other service activities include participation in new student events such as open houses, info sessions, and orientation and serving on College-wide committees.

  • Terminal degree in Informatics or related field required by the start of appointment, for Assistant Teaching Professor; Master degree required for Assistant Academic Specialist

  • A minimum of 5-7 years' experience in a leadership role in systems administration or systems development in an enterprise. Knowledgeable about how to manage and maintain networks and cloud services

  • Demonstrated ability or potential for teaching excellence is required

  • A proven track record in developing curricula or coursework is valued

  • The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate outstanding teaching competence (both on-ground and online), a dedication to continued improvement as an educator, and the ability to work with adult learners.
