Guilford College, a national liberal arts college, seeks a new Vice President for Advancement.  Guilford is pursuing a Vice President who is a seasoned Advancement leader who will make a long-term impact on our institution at a pivotal moment of both challenge and significant opportunity.  

Advancement Leadership Priorities 

The new Vice President for Advancement will focus on the following priorities: 

  • Major Gifts and the Guilford Forward Fund. The Vice President will continue the momentum of the ongoing Guilford Forward Fund effort that has raised more than $5 million since January, cultivating major donors in partnership with the President and Advancement team. Managing a newly-engaged network of volunteers for this effort remains a priority.
  • Build on the Strengths of the Advancement Staff. The Vice President will be a successful manager who can continue to develop the Advancement team — setting an example of excellence, establishing clear roles and expectations and mentoring team members in their own professional growth. 
  • Communicate Effectively with Constituents. The campus and extended community have benefited greatly by having a Vice President who is an effective communicator who engages them appropriately in advancing the mission of Guilford College. This work must continue. Students want someone who welcomes working in a diverse environment and is eager to get to know them personally and understand their needs. Faculty members believe opportunities exist to highlight more of their research and work with students in ways that will excite and engage supporters. Alumni and parents, strongly affected by the Guilford experience, want to keep building creative means of engagement. 
  • Plan and Execute Fundraising Initiatives. Guilford’s student profile provides key opportunities for scholarship fundraising. The success of the Guilford Forward Fund indicates how an energized donor base can step up and support both the short- and long-term needs of the College. Planned giving opportunities need cultivation, and the Guilford Edge program represents a key mechanism for aligning fundraising with curricular programming. Longer term, the Vice President will have the opportunity to plan and implement a capital campaign (the first since 2014), building upon effective core operations s/he has established and thinking creatively about new funding opportunities for Guilford.

In addition, the successful candidate will be: 

  • An Advancement leader with significant experience in higher education, including a demonstrated track record for building and managing teams, soliciting major gifts and planning and executing a capital campaign. 
  • A keen strategist versed in best practices advancement systems who has demonstrated success in identifying, planning mechanisms for, and achieving key and realistic philanthropic goals. 
  • A smart, collaborative thinker ready to join and enhance the senior leadership team. 
  • A good listener whose cultural competence allows her/him to nurture relationships in an environment that embraces diversity in its many forms. 
  • A skilled manager and inspiring leader who possesses both a command of best practice across advancement areas and the ability to see creative opportunities unique to Guilford. 
  • An excellent communicator who enjoys engaging the campus community as well as external constituents in advancing institutional goals. 
  • An advocate for liberal arts education who is highly ethical, energetic and dedicated to the success of Guilford College. 
  • A person committed to excellence who is respectful of Guilford traditions while leading change. 
  • A person with a sense of humor who is genuine, transparent, flexible and collegial. Requirements 
  • Minimum of 5 years of senior-level leadership and management experience in a college/university setting
  • Baccalaureate degree
