Job Description:
The English Department at Baruch College of the City University
of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a tenure-track
assistant professor position with a focus in Theoretical /
Computational Linguistics. The successful candidate will serve as
Assistant Professor in the English Department beginning August 25,
2022.
The College is especially interested in candidates who can
contribute to our mission of educating one of the most diverse
student bodies in the U.S. Successful candidates will collaborate
with current faculty to help design and teach upper division
courses in linguistics and first-year writing for multilingual
students.
The Assistant Professor of Theoretical/Computational Linguistics
will have expertise within the following scholarly areas: general
theoretical linguistics (syntax, semantics, phonology, historical
linguistics) and/or computational linguistics. Additional welcome
areas of interest may include natural language processing, language
and cognition, language acquisition, underrepresented/minority
languages, language variation and bilingualism, world Englishes,
writing studies, corpus linguistics, and/or computer-assisted
language learning. The candidate would be able to engage with the
applied orientation of the department, teaching theoretical
linguistics to a general audience of students while inciting
interest in its growing practical applications. Teaching graduate
courses is possible with an appointment to the CUNY Graduate Center
Linguistics Program. The successful candidate will demonstrate the
capacity to work across disciplinary interests within the English
Department, and with such other departments and programs at the
college such as Modern Languages, Translation Studies, Mathematics
and Computer Science, and/or Black and Latino Studies.
Baruch College, part of the City University of New York system,
enjoys a central Manhattan location with easy access to museums and

a highly diverse, intellectually curious undergraduate population
in one of the largest public, urban university systems in the U.S.
