Position: Assistant Professor, PK-12 Mathematics Education
Starting Date: August, 2022
Minimum Qualifications:
1) An earned doctorate in math education or in PK-12 Education (or
a closely-related field) with a strong emphasis in mathematics from
an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required. Applicants
nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For
appointment, the doctorate must be completed and awarded by the
date of appointment (August 18, 2022).
2) A minimum of three years teaching experience at the elementary
and/or secondary level as a practicing PK-12 educator and “teacher
of record”.
3) Evidence of teaching math education at the university level
(undergraduate and/or graduate level) from an equity and
justice-oriented perspective (e.g., critical race studies, ethnic
studies, trauma/healing informed pedagogies, culturally
relevant/responsive or sustaining pedagogies).
4) Potential to develop and maintain a research and publishing
agenda in math education in PK-12 teaching and/or research
strategies from an equity and justice-oriented perspective (e.g.,
critical race studies, ethnic studies, trauma/healing informed
pedagogies, culturally relevant/responsive or sustaining
pedagogies)
5) Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a
culturally, linguistically and ethnically diverse urban campus
environment with a substantial population of first-generation
students.
Preferred Qualifications:
1) Evidence of successful postsecondary teaching experience at the
graduate level.
2) Evidence of experience supervising student teachers.
3) Evidence of successful online teaching experience and the use of
technology to support teaching and learning.
4) Demonstrated expertise in areas related to equity and
justice-oriented frameworks in mathematics courses. 5) Experience
teaching university level courses for pre-service and/or in-service
teachers in mathematics courses such as algebra, statistics or
calculus.
6) Evidence of K-12 classroom experience in urban settings.
7) Evidence of experience engaging in collaboration between a
university and K-12 public schools.
Duties:
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty
members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative
activity, and service to the University, profession and to the
community. These responsibilities generally include: advising
students, participation in campus and system-wide committees,
maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively
with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic
functions.
The Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education will collaborate
with faculty across the Charter College of Education and the
University, teach mathematics education courses at the
undergraduate and graduate levels (in post- baccalaureate
credential and Master’s levels), supervise and assist with field
experiences and student teaching, ground teaching in supporting
students as they prepare for state and national assessments (The
California Subject Exam for Teachers (CSET), edTPA), maintain an
active research agenda (including publications, professional
presentations, and external grant proposals), model effective
teaching practices, use instructional technology effectively, and
participate in program development, accreditation and recruitment.
Our program is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher
Credentialing (CTC).

The Division of Curriculum and Instruction in the Charter College
of Education at California State University, Los Angeles has
offerings leading to multiple subject and single subject teaching
credentials, including a Bachelor’s degree integrated with dual
credentials (multiple subject, ed. specialist) and the bilingual
authorization as well as several options leading to the Master of
Arts Degree in Education. The courses in these offerings are
designed to increase teaching effectiveness, to emphasize
fundamentals of educational research with application to
instructional leadership for planning, implementing, and evaluating
curriculum.
