Luther College seeks an Assistant Professor in Computer Science/Data Science, a tenure-track position to begin in late August 2022.  Located in Decorah, IA, Luther College is an undergraduate liberal arts college with a population of eighteen-hundred students. Our faculty and students are highly engaged in academics and research, music programs, athletics, sustainability, and service. Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther values its heritage, just as it values the diversity of its students, staff, and faculty, who hail from many faith backgrounds and heritages. Coming from 44 states and 62 countries, 14% of our students are domestic students of color and 10% are international students.

Our location in the beautiful driftless region of northeast Iowa offers a wealth of opportunities not often found in small towns. The economic vitality of the Decorah area is attributable to being a regional hub for outdoor recreation, two nationally recognized healthcare systems, top ranked schools, business, agriculture, specialty retail, dining and tourism. In a scenic rural setting, we are an easy 70-mile drive to three urban areas including Rochester, MN, home of Mayo Clinic and an IBM major campus. Research collaborations with the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Minnesota (within reasonable driving distance) are feasible.

Luther College is committed to increasing the diversity of our faculty, with a focus on mentoring and providing development opportunities and support to new faculty cohorts. This support includes new faculty workshops, development and research funding, faculty mentoring groups, providing membership to the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD), and opportunities through the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM). Applicants from historically underrepresented groups, in particular ethnic, racial and gender groups are encouraged to become a candidate.

Position and Qualifications:  Assistant Professor in computer science/data science to be part of a thriving department that offers computer science and data science majors. A PhD in computer science, data science, or a closely related discipline is required (ABD by the time of hire will be considered). We are seeking a dedicated teacher who is committed to engaging and fostering a diverse community of students in a liberal arts setting. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach a range of computer science courses and can take the lead role in the data science program, teaching a variety of data science courses at all levels. Formal training in data science and computer science will be considered a plus. The teaching load consists of six courses per year spread over fall, January, and spring terms. Additional duties include student recruitment, student advising, departmental/college service, and scholarly activity.

Apply:  Review of applications begins December 1, 2021 and continues until the position is filled.  Apply at https://luthercollege.hiretouch.com.  Applicant’s dossier will include:

  • letter of application highlighting strengths that align with the strengths of Luther College and contribute to supporting and advancing the computer science and data science programs
  • curriculum vitae
  • unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts
  • statement describing teaching styles and methods
  • brief description of research, written for a general computer science audience, including ideas for undergraduate research projects and how students might play a role in the applicant’s own research
  • the names of three references who will provide letters of recommendation (the college will contact each letter writer and provide them with a link with which to upload a letter)
