AUC School of Medicine, Dean

Adtalem Global Education is seeking an accomplished, visionary dean to lead American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. As the US and countries around the world continue to grapple with health care delivery and the size and composition of the physician workforce, this is a rare opportunity for an academic leader to strengthen and grow an international medical school that makes a large contribution to the nation’s physician workforce.

AUC was founded in 1978 on the island of Monserrat, and relocated to Cupecoy, Sint Maarten, Dutch Antilles in 1998. In 2019, AUC became a multi-campus medical school with the addition of a UK track. AUC’s mission is to train tomorrow’s physicians, whose service to their community and patients is enhanced by an international learning experience, a diverse learning community, and an emphasis on social accountability and engagement.

Reporting to the President of Adtalem Medical and Veterinary and to an independent Board of Trustees, the Dean will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of the AUC School of Medicine, including all aspects of the medical science and clinical education. The Dean will articulate a strategic vision for growth, academic excellence, and career outcomes; recruit and retain key talent including strong faculty; ensure student outcomes goals are continually achieved; and engage with the international medical education community and key stakeholders to raise AUC’s visibility and strengthen her reputation.

AUC is at an important phase of development, now in pursuit of a recently updated vision: to provide a transformative medical school experience for a purposefully diverse group of students who will positively impact health and medicine throughout their training and careers. As part of the ATGE family of institutions, there are opportunities to leverage resources and support beyond what most medical schools can do on their own. As one of two medical schools within ATGE, there is an opportunity to strengthen collaborations with RUSM. Similarly, the sister institutions within ATGE offer an opportunity to increase inter-professional educational opportunities and inter-disciplinary care delivery.

Over the past eight years, AUC has improved student outcomes, built a state-of-the-art educational building, enhanced the technology infrastructure, strengthened the relationship with Sint Maarten, improved partnerships with clinical sites, launched a new medical science campus in the UK, and begun the implementation of a systems-based curriculum, which will roll out over the next two years on both medical science campuses.

The Dean will hold an MD or equivalent, with the academic credentials that would qualify for the rank of full professor and will demonstrate successful experience in medical school administration with significant responsibility for medical education in the U.S. system. In addition, strong candidates would be accomplished and experienced leaders with outstanding interpersonal, listening, communication, and collaboration skills. In addition, they will have demonstrated integrity, courage, and an appreciation for inclusivity and the ability to interact well with University administration, faculty, students, alumni, external stakeholders, and the Board of Trustees.
