Job Summary

The Department Chair accepts the responsibility of providing leadership and maintaining administrative operations of the department in addition to performing the traditional academic duties of teaching, research, and service. The chair should also interact with the business and local community to create and strengthen the ties between the department and external constituencies including student recruitment and program growth of the department. The Department Chair reports to the Dean of the College. The workload balance between administration and traditional academic duties will be determined by the Dean of the College in conjunction with the department chair.

Knowledge of general academic policies and curriculum issues. Knowledge of applicable accreditation standards and guidelines.  Ability to engage in constructive problem-solving and conflict resolution to make sound decisions.  Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and staff within the department, college, university and diverse campus and community constituencies.  Ability to treat faculty, staff, and students with fairness, equity, and inclusion.  Ability to work collaboratively with the leadership of other academic and administrative units to develop appropriate policies and/or programs. Ability to promote student success and faculty excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Required Qualifications

1) A PhD in economics or finance from an AACSB accredited university program.

2) Rank of Associate Professor or higher with at least 10 years of academic experience.

3) A record of exemplary teaching, service, and significant intellectual contributions commiserate with experience and current rank.

4) The successful candidate should expect to maintain an active program of teaching, service, and research.

5) Ability to work collaboratively within the Department, College and University is essential.

6) Ability to teach economics or finance courses based on departmental needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior administrative experience.

Description of Job Duties

The Department Chair accepts responsibility for the following functions, as determined in conjunction with the Dean of the College:  Maintain a collegial, scholarly, department environment that supports and encourages faculty excellence in the traditional academic areas of teaching, research, and service.  Creates a shared vision, sets goals and develops unit plans.  Provides mentoring and the professional development of faculty.  Serves as an advocate for department interests.  Attempts to ensure that space, equipment, and facilities meet faculty needs.  Participates in the recruitment, orientation, and continued development of faculty and staff.  Coordinates fund raising and relationships with external constituencies where appropriate.  Creates a positive and productive work environment for support personnel.  Maintains/establishes discipline accreditation where appropriate.  Prepares and monitors the budget.  Provides leadership for curricular development, planning, revision, evaluation, and implementation.  Such leadership denotes responsibility and oversight for: Maintaining up-to-date academic programs, academic standards, and program-related goals and outcomes.   Aligning curriculum with national standards for discipline or specialization with a discipline.

Assessing and providing faculty development in the areas of curriculum development, modes of teaching, student learning, etc. Assigning, when appropriate, faculty to assist in management and/or evaluation of programs and to propose curricular issues for faculty discussion and action.  Coordinating academic offerings to provide programs that are pedagogically sound for all formats or modes of delivery.  Scheduling courses that meet student needs and makes appropriate use of faculty expertise.  Implementing specific methods of improving instruction.   Encouraging interfacing of programs with other academic departments.  Assuring catalog information, websites, and other curricular material are current and accurate.

Engages in the intellectual development of students through classroom and extracurricular activities. Engages in growing existing programs and envisions development of new programs.  Teaches classes. Advises and mentors students. Participates on examination committees. Participates in recruiting high-quality students.  Encourages ongoing curricular review by the faculty to ensure currency and relevance.  Engages in scholarly activity that is a Provides service to the academy, profession, and public. Participates on college/university governance committees/task forces and search committees. Participates in outside committees and task forces.  Performs leadership tasks in professional associations/networks.  Participates in professional development activities.  Establishes partnerships with constituencies including, but not limited to other colleges and universities, employers, not-for-profit and for-profit organizations, and the like.

Supervises faculty and staff in the department. · Identifies/determines faculty roles, priorities and assignments.  Develops and mentors faculty and staff. Provides feedback and performance evaluation to faculty.   Administers academic, human resources and legal policies.
