Conservatory at Berklee invites applications for a
full-time faculty position as teacher, stage director, and
recruiting and advisory head of Opera Studies in the Music
Division. The ideal candidate for this position will be a
motivated, innovative professional who is committed to excellence
in teaching, has a demonstrated record of prominent musical
engagement as a stage director and teacher, and enjoys working in a
campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural
understanding. This is a 9-month full-time faculty position with
renewable contract; initial appointment to begin September 1, 2022.
Compensation and rank are commensurate with professional
experience.
Opera Studies at Boston
Conservatory: Boston Conservatory’s Opera
Program comprises two core ensembles, Opera Studio and Opera
Workshop, and its educational mission is supported by a range of
courses including Acting, Movement, Aria Class, Recitative Class,
Characterization, Drama of the Score, and Business of the Opera
Business. Students earn one of two degrees in the Opera Program: a
Master of Music in Opera Performance or a Graduate Performance
Diploma in Opera Performance. Performance Certificate students may
also choose a focus in opera.
Primary Duties &
Responsibilities:
Primary duties include: in the capacity of recruitment
and advisory head, this position will lead the opera experience for
MM Opera students as well as for all students in the graduate and
undergraduate programs of the Voice Department; guide students in
mastering integration of singing, acting, and understanding of the
score, primarily through the 10-hour per week Opera Studio Class;
act as Academic Advisor for all MM and GPD Opera students and
interact with Academic Affairs; oversee the annual production of
2-3 fully staged operas, opera scenes, and Children’s Opera;
recommend and facilitate visits by appropriate guest artists and
master teachers; interact with theater production staff, costume
designers, set builders, designers, marketing and development in
support of all productions; coordinate schedules of Music Director,
coaches, guest conductors, guest directors, assistant director;
manage and oversee all Opera Program work study positions; oversee
all opera scheduling (Opera Studio and Opera Workshop); in the
capacity of recruitment and advisory head, this position will work
with admissions and marketing to attract and recruit students
appropriate to the mission of the Conservatory and the opera
program.
Other duties and responsibilities will be based on
the candidate’s individual experience, along with areas of the
candidate’s specialization. Service to the field is expected and
will include active involvement in national professional opera
organizations, presentations at conferences, and guest
directing.
Required
Skills:
- High level stage direction skills
- Deep knowledge of the standard operatic repertoire as well as connection with contemporary opera and living composers
- Advanced understanding of classical vocal training
- Organizational and personal skills appropriate to the demands of an opera program in an educational setting, as well as to the needs of an academic musical community
- An earned Master’s degree or equivalent
- Minimum 5 years teaching in accredited Higher Education Institution or equivalent experience
- An openness to diverse musical styles and ways of learning/teaching
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Desire to work within a diverse faculty and student body
