Job Summary/Basic Function:

Search reopened! Wheaton College has an immediate need to hire two full-time Area Coordinators to work directly with our resident students and student Resident Advisors. This is a great opportunity to join an enthusiastic and dedicated team of student affairs professionals, and to make a direct and important impact on the programs and services for our residential students.

To support and enhance the mission of the Office of Residential Life, the Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for contributing to the co-curricular education of students primarily through the development of a healthy and vibrant residential community. This includes the day-to-day management of a residential area with approximately 350 residents and supervision of 15 Resident Advisors. Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Administration:
- Hold office hours that are posted and communicated with supervisor staff, Resident Advisors, and students.
- Participate in hall opening, closing processes, inspections, and other operational processes.
- Assist with logistics pertaining to room changes, keys, checkouts, etc.
- Assist with coordination of monthly Resident Advisor all-staff meetings.
- Carry out administrative duties such as filing, typing, printing, copying, scanning, etc.
- Correspond with Resident Advisors, students, and families as necessary.
- Assist with Residential Life assessment and evaluation efforts.

Community Development
- Is visible and available to students and staff within the Office of Residential Life, by attending events and programs, participating in larger Residential Life events and initiatives, and facilitating community initiatives.
- Respond to student and community issues and concerns including, but not limited to, roommate conflicts, community conflicts, student and community behavior, facilities concerns, and conduct violations on request.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with the student and academic affairs divisions as well as the broader Wheaton community.
- Participate in department, division, and campus-wide committees as needed or desired.
- Role model a healthy and balanced lifestyle that demonstrates integrity, kindness, flexibility, and humor.
- Create programming, and support Resident Advisors’ programming, that enhances the sense of community and supports the mission of the college.

Crisis Management and Student Conduct:
- Respond to conduct matters and violations of residence hall and college policies, including both violation adjudications and general follow-up.
- Uphold and enforce the Student Code of Conduct and Residential Life Community Standards.
Serve as a conduct officer under the direction of the Dean of Students Office.
- Follow-up with residents who may be students of concern, are in need of mediation of residential conflicts, and/or are in violation of college policies.
- Serve as primary college administrator on call as part of the “Tier 1” rotation.
- Lead a coordinated response to campus incidents that involve Wheaton students.
- Address emergent needs of students.
- Support Campus Safety in their responsibilities with respect to addressing student concerns and advise them on proper protocol.
- Respond to campus incidents when on call – which includes 24-hour availability approximately one calendar week a month.
- Communicate as necessary with Student Affairs upper-administration (“Tier 2”) staff and other campus partners.
- Generally counsel, advise, and refer students for personal, emotional, and academic needs.

Program Support:
- As directed, coordinate in the planning, execution, and assessment of departmental programs, including, but not limited to – Resident Advisor Training, Theme House Training, Resident Advisor Selection, Theme House Selection, Hall Opening/Closing, Non-Academic Year Housing, or Room Assignment/Selection.
- Participate in all required professional staff training and development.
- Contribute to regular social media posts on behalf of Campus Life.
- Assist in recognition efforts of student leaders.
- Support Campus Life programs and initiatives including New Student Orientation, Parent and Family Weekend, Senior Week, Commencement, and others.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Undergraduate degree required.
- Evidence of strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse population of students and colleagues.
- Knowledge of effective and emerging practices in social justice and anti-racism programming and education.
- Mature communication skills and evidence of ability to work effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
- Ability to work independently and with good judgment in complex situations.
- Experience working with diverse populations and a demonstrated understanding of experiences faced by students who are members of historically excluded groups.
- Demonstrated experience and skills related to program development, student development, and working with small or large groups.
- Handle multiple projects and tasks at any given time as requested by the supervisor.
- Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.
- Anticipate the needs of others in order to ensure their seamless and positive experience.
- Carry out the tasks as identified as a Title IX Reporter and a Clery Campus Security Authority, and respond and report accordingly.
- Ability to manage a complex job involving ambiguous tasks, multiple responsibilities, and an irregular and unpredictable schedule.
- Experience in programming, assessment, and counseling in the context of a small residential college a plus.
- Experience advising student organizations and working with a student activities program a plus.
- Experience working effectively as part of a group and proven to be a “team player.”
Sense of humor and flexibility.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Master’s degree in college student personnel administration, higher education administration, or a related area OR 1-2 years professional or graduate level experience professionally within a higher education setting preferred.
