The media production specialist will be responsible for supporting the instructional, studio maintenance, and production needs of the Communication and Media Studies Department and will teach one media production related course each semester.

SUNY Cortland’s Communication and Media Studies Department provides undergraduate programs in Communication Studies, New Communication Media, Media Production, and Cinema Studies. Support instruction :
  • Contact all studio production faculty prior to each semester to ascertain their anticipated needs.
  • In collaboration with the academic department chair order all supplies for studio classes, audiovisual programs, demonstrations, and productions, as needed.
  • Organize studio materials, in consultation with academic department chair and faculty.
  • Ensure that all materials and equipment for assigned courses, and the production studios are complete and functional when stored, ready at class time and, that faculty are notified of readiness.
  • Support faculty as needed with preparation, set-up. and breakdown of equipment and materials in other studio classes.

Supervise Student Workers:
  • Train, schedule, and supervise interns and temporary service student assistants (typically 1-3 students each semester) for the department.

Maintain studios:
  • Maintain the studios (television, audio, radio, multimedia, one button, etc.). The studio maintenance includes keeping records of service contracts, software upgrades, assisting in the smooth operation of the systems, and contacting the necessary personnel for further maintenance/servicing when appropriate.

Serve as the department’s Equipment Control Officer :
  • Establish and maintain familiarity with the equipment needs of the department.
  • Manage online equipment checkout system.
  • Maintain an inventory of departmental equipment as required by Property Control.
  • Routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and out-sourcing of repairs as appropriate for studio and field production equipment.
  • Acquire new equipment and decommission obsolete equipment in consultation with the chair.
  • Maintain a file (digital and/or hard copy) of manuals for equipment.
  • Maintain an adequate stock of consumable supplies. Including identification of faculty needs and product research to identify appropriate products and potential vendors. With academic chair approval, obtain quotes and other information necessary for purchases.

Support and enhance media communication efforts, projects, and initiatives on campus in consultation with the department chair.

Maintain a task schedule for major projects and report to the department chair concerning progress on long-term projects.

Teach one introductory media production course each semester as needed by the department in consultation with the chair. Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • Reports to the chair of the Communication and Media Studies Department.
  • Supervises student interns and temporary service student assistants for the Communication and Media Studies Department.
Required Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree (i.e., BA or BS in Communication)

Experience:
  • 7 years of video production experience (studio, field, location) including content acquisition, editing and distribution.
  • 7 years studio maintenance experience (television, audio, multimedia)
  • Radio programming and monitoring experience
  • Teaching experience at the college level
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated familiarity with campus video programming
  • Demonstrated familiarity with NDI and other networked video protocols
  • Experience with 3D video projection mapping
