Assistant Professor of Japanese

Position is full-time academic year tenure-track, permanent.

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Rhode Island is a collaborative, forward-leaning, and dynamic team of individuals committed across all languages to the departmental priorities of proficiency-based teaching, intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and languages for the professions. We also house the Chinese Flagship Language Program as well as five other signature programs: the International Engineering Program, International Business Program, International Computer Science Program, the International Studies and Diplomacy Program and the International Pharmaceutical Sciences Program. Our department invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Japanese with specialization in Japanese language teaching to begin Fall 2022. The successful candidate will provide critical support in teaching, research and service to the university’s growing Japanese language program which falls within the Global Languages and Area Studies (GLAS) major as well as program development for the Japanese language track of the various URI dual degree programs, including the International Engineering Program, International Business Program, International Computer Science Program and the International Studies and Diplomacy Program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach Japanese courses across the undergraduate curriculum with special emphasis on Japanese language and culture. Contribute to the department’s proficiency, intercultural communicative competence and languages for the professions initiatives. Establish and maintain a solid research program.  Contribute through service and collaboration to the missions of the Japanese program, the Japanese International Engineering program, the Japanese International Studies & Diplomacy program, our other signature programs, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the University. Contribute through service to honing and maintaining URI’s Japanese student mobility programs and the advising of students planning to study abroad in Japan. Contribute to the development and expansion of the curriculum for interdisciplinary models of Japanese language teaching.
