Position Summary

The Associate Director of Student Engagement and Leadership is a full-time professional staff position which is part of the Office of University Centers within the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse ( UWL ). In conjunction with the Director of University Centers, the Associate Director is responsible for the development, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive, strategic student engagement and leadership development program. The Associate Director shall provide direct administrative and fiscal oversight to the Center for Organizations, Vision, and Engagement (the COVE ) as well as the Leadership and Involvement Center ( LIC ). This includes the coordination of student activities and leadership programs for over 200 student organizations, and the supervision of a team comprised of professional, graduate assistant, and student staff members. The Associate Director is responsible for providing student engagement and leadership development opportunities both in person and virtually.

This position has a targeted offer of $61,000 annually and a generous benefits package, equivalent to 40% of the position’s salary. See the Miscellaneous section for specific details on benefits.

Description of College / Department / Program / Division / Unit

The Division of Student Affairs’ role is to enhance and support students learning experience here at UWL . We work closely with faculty, staff, community members, alumni and most importantly, students to provide quality programs and services which promote learning, leadership, involvement, service, and the celebration of diversity. The Division includes several departments: Admissions, Campus Child Center, Counseling and Testing, Student Health Center, Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreational Sports, Residence Life, Student Life, University Centers, and the Vice Chancellor & Dean of Students office. The staff of the Division is truly student-centered and concerned about the holistic development of the student.

University Centers serves the community by providing a welcoming environment that facilitates learning opportunities, embraces diversity, and enriches the campus experience. University Centers provides operational oversight to the Student Union, the Whitney Dining Center, the Center for Organizations, Vision, and Engagement (the COVE ) and the Leadership and Involvement Center ( LIC ). University Centers also provides a wide variety of services, spaces, and amenities including the Information Center, Eagle ID Program, Dining Plans, Campus Food Pantry, and more.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration, Student Development, Higher Education, or related field.
  • Five or more years of full-time experience working with student activities and/or student leadership development programs.
  • Five or more years of experience supervising full-time professional, graduate assistant, and student staff members.
  • Ability to develop leadership and student employee training programs.
  • Possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and the willingness to work and communicate in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Possess a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity.
  • Available to work night, weekend, and occasional holiday hours.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of student development and experience working with and advising college students.
  • Experience in the planning and management of small to large scale events and programs.
  • Experience in reviewing and executing performer/activity contracts.
  • Successful experience in the development, implementation, and the assessment of Student Learning Outcomes.
  • Experience working with budgets.
  • Understanding of the importance of collaboration within the unit and the university.
  • Ability to problem solve, work in an environment with uncertainty, and readily adapt to change.
  • An understanding of student development, student life, and university processes and business.
  • Ability to use and adapt to current technology and new technology and software.

Responsibility Statement

Responsible for the overall direction and administration of the Center for Organizations, Vision, and Engagement (the COVE), the Leadership and Involvement Center (LIC), and Student Activities Programs.

Duties to Support Responsibility
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive, strategic student engagement and leadership development program.
  • Supervise the Leadership, Involvement, Engagement, and Student Activities operations, including: the Campus Activities Board ( CAB ), 200+ Recognized Student Organizations, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Campus Food Pantry, and Student Graphics.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Center for Organizations, Vision, and Engagement (the COVE ) physical space including, but not limited to space designation and assignments, organization storage, monitoring group usage, and maintaining the overall supplies and functioning of the area to enhance the student experience.
  • Provide support to the Pride Center (part of the Division of Diversity & Inclusion, located inside the COVE ) by collaborating with the center staff and programming.
  • Supervise the hiring, training, professional development, evaluation, and daily operational oversight of staff including: four (4) full-time Program Coordinators, one (1) Administrative Support Assistant, Graduate Assistants, and approximately 20 student staff members.
  • Responsible for the Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee ( SUFAC ) budget allocation for these areas.
  • Responsible for the development and oversight of the budgets for the COVE and LIC .
  • Oversee the Student/Faculty/Organization financial accounts for all registered student organizations.
  • Supervise the development of resources and programs that facilitate the understanding of leadership and civic engagement including, but not limited to: the UWL chapter with The Society of Leadership and Success ( NSLS ), the Chancellors Service Award, voter registration initiatives, and providing students with opportunities to participate in programs like the LeaderShape® Institute.
  • Responsible for the oversite of large-scale events including, but not limited to: Sample the City, Involvement Fest, Eagle Fest, and Spring Spectacular.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and the assessment of Student Learning Outcomes.
  • Develop relationships with academic areas and other units at the University to create educational experiences for students both inside and beyond the classroom, and explore other collaborative opportunities for student engagement.

Responsible for supervising and promoting the involvement of students in all student organizations, programs, and activities at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Duties to Support Responsibility
  • Oversee the assistance and advisement of 200+ student organizations and student groups regarding cultural, educational, recreational, and other co-curricular programs. Provide sound advising to student organizations regarding budgeting, University financial policies and processes, the procedures related to contractual matters, and the issues and concerns related to risk management and quality program planning.
  • Provide support for the recruitment, training, and day-to-day operations for Recognized Student Organization Advisers.
  • Facilitate the approval of new Recognized Student Organizations.
  • Supervise administration of student organization databases including: MyOrgs and UGetConnected.

  • Oversee the coordination of logistical planning for programs and events, in collaboration with areas of the University including, but not limited to: Campus Dining, Facilities Management, Parking, and University Police.
  • Maintain records and document important information related to the work of the COVE, the LIC, and their programs in order to evaluate information and continually improve student experiences and engagement.
  • Provide assistance and coordination for the Six-Week Engagement Program.
  • Conduct evaluation and assessment of all programs, events, and services provided within areas of oversight.
