Beginning August 2022, the Assistant Professor of Art Education
carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching and development
of courses that cover art education theories and practices in PK-12
settings. Courses cover diverse themes in art education, including
developmental theory, issues of visual culture, media & visual
literacy and current topics such as STEAM education and
sustainability. The candidate will also be required to perform
student advising as well as Department and University committee
work. Candidates will need to demonstrate commitment to both
research and teaching methods. Student populations within art
education courses include majors in art education, art studio,
liberal studies, and other majors. Candidates must be able to use
traditional and innovative methods to engage students of diverse
backgrounds. The person selected will play an active role in the
further development of our art education program. The successful
candidate must be committed to teamwork within the art education
area and the department, thus adding to the creative and
intellectual life of the department and its students. Opportunities
for teamwork include resource development, a guest speakers
program, exhibition development, internship programs, symposium
development, and formal and informal class connections with
colleagues.
The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a doctorate degree in Art Education, Ed.D. or Ph.D. Candidates nearing completion of the terminal degree may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the degree must be met no later than August 17, 2022. A minimum of 3 years of teaching in public schools or similar experiences and evidence of research in art education are required.
The Department of Art and Art History is NASAD accredited. The Department offers BA options in Art Education, Art History and Art Studio; and a BFA program with options in Art Studio and Interior Architecture. An MA is offered in Art History and an MFA in Art Studio. The Department of Art and Art History faculty members are a dedicated group of artists and scholars deeply involved in art, pedagogy, and in bringing our work out of the classroom into our communities. Our students (32% Latinx, 41% White, 4% Asian, 4% African American, 5% multiracial) reflect the campus’s diversity. They push boundaries and produce reflective work for our galleries and other public venues that engage with contemporary issues. We have eleven full-time faculty, a large part-time pool of faculty, and five staff. The studio areas are well equipped with labs for ceramics, drawing, digital media, glass, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Art History has strengths in Mesoamerican, Medieval, and Modern, with specialists in postcolonial and critical race studies, feminism and gender studies, structuralism and semiotics. Art Education has strengths in Cultural Diversity in Art Education and Japanese Pop Culture. An award winning learning/teaching center, The Ira Latour Visual Resources Center houses an extensive collection of books, periodicals, videos, and digital images. Other important artistic teaching resources include the University Art Gallery, which presents exhibitions of regional- and nationally-based artists, and the Janet Turner Print Museum, which maintains an extensive permanent study collection. Chico is a town with a vibrant community. It is located three hours north of the Bay Area and one and a half hours north of Sacramento, offering easy access to major art activity.
