Department of Social Work Tenure-line Faculty positions

The George Mason University, Department of Social Work invites applications for an open rank search for two 9-month tenure-track/tenured faculty members at the assistant, associate, or full professor level. Areas of interest are focusing on social work intervention research, child and family welfare, and behavioral health for individuals and communities who have been historically oppressed.

George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.

About the Department:

The Department of Social Work has internationally recognized faculty for their expertise in areas of behavioral health, older adults, children and youth, and immigration, with a proud history of faculty-student-community research collaborations. The Department just received a HRSA-Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) grant to train the next generation of social workers in evidence-based approaches for behavioral health. Additionally, faculty are engaged in innovative, collaborative research projects that leverage university partnerships to incorporate digital technology solutions and computing techniques in developing service interventions. The Department of Social Work offers BSW and MSW degree programs with an educational and research mission focusing on practice and policy interventions that improve health and well-being and promote economic and social justice, particularly for individuals, families, and communities who have been historically oppressed. It has recently launched a highly-enrolled online MSW degree program and is building a PhD degree program. The department comprises 20 faculty and an active research portfolio of approximately $1.5 million in extramural funding.

 Responsibilities:

  • Develop or continue a program of original research;
  • Engage in collaborative research;
  • Teach and mentor students;
  • Establish and/or bring an extramurally funded research program;
  • Engage in professional service in support of advancing the College’s mission; and
  • To the extent possible, faculty will be expected to synergistically contribute to the development of courses, degree programs, and research.

 Required Qualifications:

  • An earned Doctoral degree in Social Work or closely-related discipline;
  • An earned MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited program and two or more years of post-MSW practice experience;
  • Ability to teach BSW and MSW practice courses and mentor undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Evidence of research excellence as measured by publications in or submissions to peer-reviewed journals; pursuit of or being awarded external grant funding; and acceptance as a peer-reviewed presenter for conferences or invitations to present as an expert in professional settings; and
  • Evidence of or a willingness to provide service within academic, professional, or community settings.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates for assistant professorships ideally should have a strong and established trajectory of refereed publications and evidence of research funding (intra- or extramurally funded grants or awards); and
  • Preference will be given to candidates who can teach a range of direct practice/clinical courses for BSW/MSW students.
