Job Summary/Basic Function

Millersville University invites nominations and applications for the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services ( EDHS ). This position offers a unique opportunity to build a common identity and collaborative culture in a College that combines Education with Human Services disciplines. We seek an academic leader focused on interdisciplinary innovation utilizing the broad array of robust programs across five academic Departments. The College consists of the Departments of Early, Middle and Exceptional Education; Educational Foundations; Psychology; Wellness and Sport Sciences; and the School of Social Work. This position also supervises the Migrant Education Program, Field Services, the Professional Education Unit, and grant-funded programs.

As the chief academic officer of the College of EDHS, the Dean is expected to be a strong advocate and an inspiring leader for all faculty, staff and students in the College. The Dean provides academic and administrative leadership and ensures support for instruction, research and professional development, while overseeing daily operations of the College. The Dean is responsible for strategic planning, program development and assessment, fundraising, grant writing, and budget. The Dean evaluates the faculty and manages the staff in a public, collective bargaining-based university environment. The Dean reports directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Required Qualifications 

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines in the College of Education and Human Services and a minimum of five years of progressively responsible academic administrative experience.
  • Record of scholarship, teaching and service in higher education appropriate to appointment within the faculty at the rank of full professor.
  • Documented experience in influencing student success in graduate and undergraduate programs.
  • Documented experience in developing, retaining, and evaluating faculty and professional staff.
  • Documented evidence of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the administrative role.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide vision, leadership, and advocacy for the University and for the College, its programs, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Established record of strategic planning, providing leadership in the design and development of new academic programs and policies.
  • Experience with the accreditation process (institutional, general education or specialized programs), assessment of program outcomes and evaluation of teaching effectiveness within the context of a liberal arts institution.
  • Experience representing programs and initiatives in human services through speaking and writing to a variety of academic and community audiences.
  • Experience with academic budgeting and financial planning. Evidence of facilitating external partnerships with community stakeholders.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills


Preferred Qualifications

  •  Experience in collective bargaining environment.
  • Experience with donor relations and advancement efforts.
  • Knowledge of current challenges in human services and teacher preparation in higher education
