Job Description

The Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC) is seeking applicants for up to three tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor positions, whose teaching and research interests align with the School’s goals and the trajectory of a thriving industry. Recent initiatives at Virginia Tech include a campus-wide, multi-disciplinary focus on Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities as well as a focus on Industry 4.0 for Construction. Such initiatives endorse a wide range of research foci, including:

• Researching intelligent, adaptable, and sustainable, human-centric technologies for the built environment
• Exploring the tools of analysis, representation, design, construction and evaluation directed towards new construction or adaptive re-use and performance improvement of existing structures.
• Innovating autonomous systems and robotics, artificial intelligence, virtual/augmented reality, 3-D printed structures, human-centered infrastructure systems, additive manufacturing, Internet-of-Things, wireless and cyber security.
• Advancing digital design and construction, human-technology interaction, robotics, semi- or autonomous systems, mixed-reality technologies, building performance, facility and energy management, building systems and controls that will support a more sustainable, resilient, and energy neutral built environment

The Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC) is a joint venture between the College of Engineering and the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. A tenure-track appointment to the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor carries with it professional responsibilities in teaching/learning, research/discovery, and outreach/engagement/service.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in construction or a closely related discipline by appointment start date.

Applicant must demonstrate a high potential (Assistant Level) or established ability (Associate Level) to effectively:
- develop and maintain a nationally recognized research program.
- to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
- work with students, faculty, staff, and industry partners from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

Applicants for the Associate Professor rank are expected to have a strong record of publications and externally-funded research, or are leaders in their teaching and/or service achievements.

Preferred Qualifications

State-of-the-art facilities are being constructed to support teaching and research within the Myers-Lawson School of Construction. It is therefore preferred that the candidate has teaching, research, and/or industry experience with one or more of the technical areas listed above.

An individual with a demonstrated potential (for the Assistant Professor rank) or proven record (for the Associate Professor rank) of interdisciplinary collaboration, and who shares our core values of inclusion, safety, service and experiential learning, is also preferred.
