Science Communications Manager
Job Summary
The Department of Neurosurgery at UCSF is looking for a Science
Communications Manager to join our Multimedia Division. Work with
some of the world’s top neuroscientists and physicians to bring to
life stories about brain surgery, major scientific discoveries, and
the experiences of our patients and their families.
The Science Communications Manager will work with the Department’s
Communications Director to execute the Division’s overall editorial
plan, and will own responsibility for the Department’s social media
channels. They will also be responsible for 1-2 direct
reports.
This is an exciting career opportunity for a science writer who
wants to build on their digital and social media skills and help
shape the next phase of our Division. The ideal candidate will have
experience translating scientific innovations to a lay audience;
know how to tell a good story; have a passion for exploring and
sharing digital media; have a strong affinity for health, science
and the UCSF mission; and should be a creative, critical thinker.
They will also be personable and able to interact successfully with
a wide variety of individuals in a warm, collaborative
manner.
Key responsibilities:
Interact with neuroscientists, clinicians and
staff to source and develop content for a variety of mediums,
including social media, websites, newsletters, print and
video
Collaborate with other (talented and fun!)
members of the multimedia team to generate interactive media,
videos, and infographics.
Manage all social media channels and generate
creative ideas for new campaigns that highlight our clinical,
research and academic missions. Attend and cover major conferences
and meetings.
Monitor and measure the impact of engagement
efforts and implement adjustments as necessary. Research new
trends, emerging channels, and best practices in SEO, social media,
and other tactics that can be used to drive awareness.
Manage content for websites and monitor activity
to increase traffic and engagement
Train, supervise, motivate and evaluate direct
report(s)
Oversee and/or assist with photo and video
shoots as needed
Work closely with colleagues across the UCSF
enterprise to develop and promote stories, including UCSF Health
Marketing, Public Affairs, and Philanthropy Departments

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent
experience/training
• Solid knowledge of all aspects of digital communications,
including design concepts, various media, applications, strategic
planning, etc.
• Knowledge of HTML and content management systems
• Excellent proofreading skills
• Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop,
InDesign, and InCopy
• Experience using web and social media analytics to refine
communication strategy
• Solid skills to ensure production of high-quality work within
budget and time constraints
• Ability to communicate complex scientific information
understandably, accurately and engagingly to the public
• Solid project management and strategic planning skills
• Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active
listening and political acumen skills
• Solid analytical and critical thinking skills
• Ability to initiate and balance multiple projects, meet
deadlines, and work with diverse teams
• Collaborate with a diverse faculty group with a high level of
professionalism
Preferred Qualifications
• PhD or certificate from accredited science-writing program
• Advanced knowledge of neuroscience and neurosurgery topics and
trends
• Solid knowledge of the current trends and potential future
developments in the digital communications field
• Solid knowledge of the organization, including its achievements,
mission, vision, goals, policies, practices and
infrastructure
• Solid knowledge and skills in financial and personnel
administration and management techniques, including understanding
of guiding principles, relevant laws, policies and best
practices
• Solid skills to select, train, supervise, guide and evaluate
subordinate staff, and take corrective action as required
• Solid problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills
