Job Summary
The Department of Neurosurgery at UCSF is looking for a Science Communications Manager to join our Multimedia Division. Work with some of the world’s top neuroscientists and physicians to bring to life stories about brain surgery, major scientific discoveries, and the experiences of our patients and their families.

The Science Communications Manager will work with the Department’s Communications Director to execute the Division’s overall editorial plan, and will own responsibility for the Department’s social media channels. They will also be responsible for 1-2 direct reports.

This is an exciting career opportunity for a science writer who wants to build on their digital and social media skills and help shape the next phase of our Division. The ideal candidate will have experience translating scientific innovations to a lay audience; know how to tell a good story; have a passion for exploring and sharing digital media; have a strong affinity for health, science and the UCSF mission; and should be a creative, critical thinker. They will also be personable and able to interact successfully with a wide variety of individuals in a warm, collaborative manner.

Key responsibilities:

Interact with neuroscientists, clinicians and staff to source and develop content for a variety of mediums, including social media, websites, newsletters, print and video
Collaborate with other (talented and fun!) members of the multimedia team to generate interactive media, videos, and infographics.
Manage all social media channels and generate creative ideas for new campaigns that highlight our clinical, research and academic missions. Attend and cover major conferences and meetings.
Monitor and measure the impact of engagement efforts and implement adjustments as necessary. Research new trends, emerging channels, and best practices in SEO, social media, and other tactics that can be used to drive awareness.
Manage content for websites and monitor activity to increase traffic and engagement
Train, supervise, motivate and evaluate direct report(s)
Oversee and/or assist with photo and video shoots as needed
Work closely with colleagues across the UCSF enterprise to develop and promote stories, including UCSF Health Marketing, Public Affairs, and Philanthropy Departments
