Primary Duties
Under the general direction of the Associate VP of Facilities and Capital Projects, the Director of Energy & Sustainability works to manage and execute sustainable projects across the campus and establish CSU, Chico as a leader in the field of sustainability within the CSU system and at the state, regional, and national levels. The incumbent is responsible for leadership, innovation, and management necessary to coordinate and implement the university’s comprehensive sustainability program, maintenance of the Campus Climate Action plan, and the campus Recycling Program. The incumbent serves as the campuses primary point of contact and leader in reduction of energy, waste, and water conservation. They facilitate the coordination necessary to achieve operational efficiencies and evaluate policies, practices, and procedures, while meeting the goals and objectives of the campus’ sustainability plans and initiatives, and complying with regulatory requirements.

In addition, the incumbent assists with managing the daily requirements of various energy efficiency programs and initiatives. Activities will include project management, report writing, utility bill analysis, authorizing invoices for payment, securing energy rebate incentives, maintaining and operating the energy and utility database tracking and reporting system, and preparing monthly financial reports for campus utility operations as well as review of energy efficiency goals, annual climate registry requirements, sustainability policies, plant operational practices, and strategic energy plans for the campus.

Coordinates implementation of the campus sustainability plan and American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment ( ACUPCC ) agreement and responsible for reporting on sustainability metrics.

KNOWLEDGE :
Thorough knowledge of:
  • Climate change science, greenhouse gas emissions sources, reporting methods and protocols, and reduction and sequestration strategies
  • Methodologies, practices and procedures associated with sustainability in higher education.
  • The general concepts of sustainability, awareness of the central issues and controversies in the discourse on sustainable development.
  • Environmental and Economic analysis, including the ability to perform cost benefit analysis.
  • Technical knowledge of sustainable practices in the areas of energy, water, waste streams, or operations,
Working knowledge of:
  • The principles of planning, management, and direction of a program.
  • The principals of administrative, personnel, and fiscal management.
  • Fluency with the use of standard office equipment (computers, copiers, phones, fax) and computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, and database management, including institutional database systems.

Required Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field- Degrees may include but are not limited to Business Management, Economics, Sustainable Development, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering, and Ecology
AND
At least three years of experience working in the field of sustainability, which may include: Green House Gas Emissions Inventorying, Cost Benefit Analysis, Energy Audits and Analysis, Environmental Planning, Sustainability Program Development and Management, Alternative Transportation Initiatives, Etc. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act ( FLSA ).
  • The duties of this position will include participation in a decision that may have a material/financial benefit to the incumbent.   • A valid California Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment in this position as well as successful completion and continued compliance of the CSU Defensive Driver’s Training course is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Incumbent/applicant will need to be able to perform the essential job functions (duties) of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This position alternates between remaining in a stationary position operating a personal computer for long periods of time and frequently moving about inside the office. Must be able to travel across campus to other offices and buildings for meetings and events.
WORK ENVIRONMENT :
This position involves frequent to constant interaction with students, faculty and staff. The office is a typical office environment with standard office equipment. This is a fast-paced environment requiring a flexible schedule. Early morning, evening or weekend hours may be required, as needed to travel and complete work, or attend conferences, workshops or meetings. When travel is required, outside locations may include even and uneven walking surfaces, exposure to weather changes such as temperatures, humidity or precipitation. Benefits

Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months. Employees appointed less than half-time or less than six months are not eligible for standard CSU benefits but do receive prorated sick leave and vacation.

Eligibility for Affordable Care Act ( ACA ) benefits is based on an appointment of at least three-quarter time, hired to work a minimum of 130 hours per month over the course of the appointment or works an average of 130 hours or more per month during the measurement period.
