Coordinator of Disability Services
Full Time/Part Time
The Coordinator of Disability Services works with the and Academic
Success Coaches to implement a vision for student disability
services through the development of programs, policies, processes,
and advocacy to provide timely and effective academic support for
students. The Coordinator reviews medical documentation, determines
accommodations appropriate for individual students, and coordinates
all accommodations and academic support initiatives for students
with disabilities across all NMHU centers and online while serving
as an advocate, advisor and support coach for students.
Duties and Responsibilities
The coordinator should be a compassionate and collaborative
individual that is organized, detail-oriented, patient, and a
flexible team player with demonstrated communication skills and
commitment to inclusivity.
· Coordinate University programs to assure compliance with the
Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ), Section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other federal and state laws and
regulations pertaining to persons with disabilities.
· Receive and process all requests for academic, housing, and
dining accommodations from students with disabilities and chronic

formulation of reasonable accommodation plans to ensure equal
access to college programs and services.
· Work with the administrative assistant to issue letters of
accommodation to students with disabilities.

· Communicate NMHU’s policies and programs involving student
disability services to prospective and current students, parents,
educators, and external organizations.
· Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to coordinate,
organize, and publicize proactive campus-wide educational and
program offerings related to disability services.
· Provide individual consultation regarding rights and
responsibilities of students with disabilities, characteristics of
specific disabilities in an educational setting, and self-advocacy
· Be available to meet with advisees in a walk-in capacity when
students are experiencing academic crises and to accompany students
as an advocate to meet with professors, departments, and other
· Provide guidance to peer advisors and part-time learning
specialists on how to work with students with different
disabilities in cases where enrolled students in caseload are
· Educate the larger NMHU community on disability as an aspect of
diversity and promote equal access for all.

with disabilities, track University progress relating to its
policies and procedures as well as state and federal laws relating
to person with disabilities, and provide consultative services to
employing units and offices.
· Ensure that appropriate processes are in place to provide for the
prompt and equitable resolution of complaints and inquiries from
University employees and students, as well as the public regarding
compliance with the ADA and other applicable federal and state laws
regarding discrimination on the basis of disability.
· Handle all formal grievance appeals related to alleged disability
discrimination for students.
· Maintain repository for ADA /504 grievances and other centralized
· Assist in building a culture of compliance across the University
and conforming to regulator expectations and best practices.
· Develops, publishes, and maintains a disabilities services manual
for students, faculty, and staff.
· Works with outside agencies such as the Department of Vocational
Rehabilitation and the Commission for the Blind to ensure students
have the necessary resources.
Minimum Job Requirements
Master’s degree in disability studies, student affairs, special
education, psychology, counseling, or related field required.
Two years of experience in college-level disability services,
academic support, or student affairs required.
Experience working with students with disabilities at the
post-secondary level preferred.
Degree in Special Education, Developmental Education, or related

· Knowledge of federal and state regulations affecting the
university in regard to the delivery of support services to
students with disabilities including Americans with Disabilities
Amendments Act of 2008 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
· Knowledge of disability academic support program design and
delivery as well as current issues and emerging trends regarding
persistence and retention of college students with
· Ability to implement inclusive programs that respond to a diverse
student population in a residential setting and distance
· Skilled at written and verbal communication including
presentations to a diverse campus constituency.
· Strong organizational and planning skills.
· Ability to use technology, especially online student success
software and accessibility tools.
· Proficient with the Microsoft suite of tools.
