This department represents scholarly activity and teaching across a wide array of design programs, and hence seeks a Department Head who will respect and appreciate the multiplicity of thought and fields in the department and can partner with the faculty and staff to build an equitable, forward-thinking department for the future. The Department Head oversees six distinct yet related degree programs within the Department of Architecture, Design & Urbanism. The Architecture Program and the Interior Design/Interior Architecture & Design Programs, each with long histories of success at Drexel, joined as a single department in 2008 to build upon their shared interests in the built environment. Since then, two new graduate programs in Urban Strategy and Design Research have further enriched the Department.

The Architecture program offers two distinct degree options for students interested in pursuing a career in architecture. The NAAB-accredited Bachelor of Architecture degree with a current enrollment of approximately 250 students leads to professional licensure that combines full- and part-time study and incorporates extensive early exposure to architectural practice. A seven-year Part-Time Evening Option serves a large population of non-traditional students drawn from the greater Philadelphia region. The unique 2+4 Option caters to recent high-school graduates who follow two years of full-time study with four years of part-time study in the evening. Students in both options gain professional working experience in architectural firms while attending classes in the evening and can participate in NCARB’s IPAL program. This academic year, we also launched the BS in Architectural Studies degree for full-time students with flexible options to combine architectural studies with related fields.

The undergraduate Interior Design program consists of approximately 130 students pursuing a CIDA-accredited BS Interior Design degree. The graduate Interior Architecture & Design program has approximately 50 students and offers a CIDA-accredited first professional degree as well as a post-professional degree. BS Interior Design students participate in professional co-operative employment during their course of study and both programs have received extensive professional recognition and national ranking.

The Design Research program offers a unique, two-year MS degree that allows students the ability to chart their own customized pathways to consider multidisciplinary problems beyond the scope of traditional boundaries of individual design disciplines.

The Urban Strategy program offers a MS that provides a multi-disciplinary, systems approach that promotes innovative and comprehensive solutions to all aspects of urban planning and public policy affecting the modern city.

All faculty and students within the Department are expected to have a close working relationship with their respective professions. Additional information on the programs within Drexel’s Department of Architecture, Design and Urbanism can be found at:
