The Department of Theology announces a search for a tenure-track position in World Religions: Islam at the rank of Assistant Professor or Instructor to begin in Fall 2018. Ph.D. preferred, but A.B.D. candidates near completion will be considered. Candidates should have expertise in contemporary Middle Eastern and/or African or South East Asian Islam, and should be proficient in Arabic. Courses to be taught are chiefly at the undergraduate level. Candidates must be able to teach courses in Islamic Religion and Culture, and be conversant with Muslim-Christian dialogue. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop courses arising from his or her area of expertise. Further teaching responsibilities will include both the department’s required general education course in The Christian Tradition, and the departmental rotation of instructors in the University’s first-year interdisciplinary Core. Typical teaching load is 3-4 courses per semester. Responsibilities beyond teaching include the construction and pursuit of a clear scholarly agenda, as well as fair share of departmental business, including advising, curricular review and development, student recruitment, and good campus citizenship.

In addition to strong academic qualifications and excellence in teaching, the University highly values experience in working across cultural and other significant differences.  At the same time, candidates should address how they would contribute to a university engaged in issues in Christian higher education in the Lutheran tradition. Valparaiso University does not unlawfully discriminate and aims to employ persons of various backgrounds and experiences to develop and support a diverse community. Candidates are strongly encouraged to consult the University’s entire EOE policy at http://www.valpo.edu/general-counsel/policies/equal-opportunity-policy/. Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to cultural diversity and the ability to work with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds. Employment at Valparaiso University will require a satisfactory criminal background check.

Interested applicants should submit the following documents via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/45483: a concise letter of application, curriculum vitae, and graduate-school transcripts. Applicants should also arrange for three confidential letters of recommendation to be submitted by their authors via Interfolio. Finalists will be invited to submit a writing sample to be reviewed by the search committee and made available to all of the members of the department. Questions concerning the position may be directed to Prof. George Pati, Chair of the Search Committee, at George.Pati@valpo.edu. Consideration of candidates will begin on October 15, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled.
