Position Description

The Department of Kinesiology at San José State University seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, Assistant Professor position in Exercise Psychology beginning in August of 2022. We highly encourage candidates with specializations in any of the following areas including, but not limited to the following to apply: health equity, exercise psychology among diverse populations, the use of exercise technology as related to psychological aspects of exercise among diverse populations, and aging. This position will be required to teach Exercise Psychology at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and should also have the ability to teach other courses within the undergraduate, graduate, general education programs such as Sport Psychology, Psychology of Coaching, Stress Management, and Diversity, Stress and Health. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels with the potential for teaching excellence both within the classroom and through online modalities. In addition, applicants are expected to show scholarly promise in the form of publications in relevant journals, presentations at scholarly conferences, and the willingness to apply for external funding.

We currently have 20 tenure-track/tenured faculty, serving over 1200 undergraduate and graduate students. We train our students in the areas of exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport history, sport philosophy, sport sociology, teacher education, adapted physical activity/education, measurement and evaluation, motor learning, motor development, and sport psychology, among others. Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate by date of appointment. Must have graduate level academic training grounded in Exercise Psychology.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate classes in Exercise Psychology, as well as core major classes and/or general education classes as needed.

  • Ability and desire to serve on thesis committees, supervise theses/projects, and advise in both the graduate and undergraduate programs.

  • Record of publications or strong potential for publications.

  • Knowledge of disciplinary trends in the field of Exercise Psychology regarding issues that center upon race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration, and underserved communities.

  • Ability to work collegially at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications


Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
  • An active and well-articulated research agenda, coupled with interest and ability to secure external grant funding.

  • The ability to collaborate with SJSU colleagues on fundable research projects relevant to exercise psychology and health equity.

  • The ability and willingness to develop ongoing relationships and internship opportunities with community organizations.

  • A comprehensive understanding of kinesiology as an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary endeavor, and enthusiasm to work in a multidisciplinary department.

  • Experience working with racially diverse students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of groups within higher education, and the profession, shape patterns of participation and outcomes.

  • Willingness to examine and re-mediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support historically underserved students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach exercise psychology courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise theses/projects, serve on thesis committees, and advise students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. May also be expected to teach core major classes, general education, or support other departmental needs.

  • Develop and sustain an ongoing record of research, scholarship, and/or creative activities, as well as other professional engagement.

  • Help to facilitate the growth of the undergraduate program in sport and exercise psychology, and propose courses/curricula as needed.

  • Conduct research, seek external funding where appropriate, present professional papers, and publish in professional journals.

  • The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.

  • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advising.
