About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University is a global leader in experiential learning
and cooperative education in which students alternate between
academic study and work experiences. The College of Engineering's
Multidisciplinary Graduate Engineering and Departmental Engineering
Co-op is seeking a Co-op Faculty member to work with its
engineering co-op students and employers. The Coordinator will work
with graduate students with a focus in the Information Systems,
Software Engineering Systems, Data Architecture & Management,
Data Analytics Engineering, Cyber Physical Systems, and
Education of Students:
The Co-op Coordinator
guides students through their career development and co-op
experiences. They educate, advise, and coach students, developing
and delivering effective teaching and coaching programs that enable
students to be successful in today's global engineering
environment. This includes, but is not limited to, working with
students one-on-one, in workshops and in the classroom.
The Co-op Coordinator teaches a career education course each
semester, and coaches students through group and individual
meetings. Classroom preparation includes teaching interviewing
skills, professional behavior and communication, workplace ethics,
and as well as leadership skills and self-awareness and emotional
The Co-op Coordinator also maintains contact with students while
engaged in their co-op experience and works with students through
their post-co-op reflection.
: Cooperative education is an
integral part of the academic experience at Northeastern and our
philosophy is that learning in the classroom is enriched by
practical experience, and practical experience enriches classroom
learning. The Coordinator collaborates with academic faculty,
administration, and the co-op community to guide students in the
integration of their co-op and academic experiences. The Co-op
Coordinator shares knowledge of industry with academic faculty to
integrate employment-based learning with curriculum-based
Employer Relations/Job Development:
Coordinator develops new partnerships and expands current employer
programs by engaging with managers, human resources contacts, and
alumni. They engage in lifelong learning to develop and maintain a
current understanding of the industry, employers, and positions.
Activities to support this endeavor include site visits to new and
existing employers, outreach to potential new co-op employer
partners, and active participation in relevant professional
organizations. High-level customer-orientation, strong presentation
skills, and experience in building and maintaining client
relationships is essential. Prior professional experience in
industry is preferred.
The Co-op Coordinator also engages in
service to the Cooperative Education department, College of
Engineering, and to Northeastern University. Service includes
making presentations to prospective students and newly admitted
students; participation on committees and task forces; and serving
as an advisor to student organizations.
- A master's degree in college student development, counseling,
education, psychology or a related engineering field is required by
the appointment start date, as well as a minimum of three years of
professional work experience.
- Experience as a career coach, certification preferable, but not
- Teaching experience in a classroom environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and comfort
presenting to diverse audiences.
- Experience working with a diverse staff and/or student
population and a demonstrated commitment to achieving and
maintaining diversity in the workplace.
- Proficiency in computer/technology and database maintenance,
and strong organizational skills.
- Knowledge and appreciation of cooperative education and its
impact on an individual's career development.
- Ability to effectively engage a diverse network of global
stakeholders, across time zones.
